Today marked the last day on site for the Hickleton Hall Prisoner of War Project. The day was spent finishing off the various drawings and recording all that still needed to be finished. The last hut base, number 8 was recorded by Becky, Anne and Rob, whilst Martin and Ant finished off sondage 7.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2ZTx1J1qmhM/U9uwPf4421I/AAAAAAAABCg/eOdJW85Abqg/s1600/DSCN3111.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2ZTx1J1qmhM/U9uwPf4421I/AAAAAAAABCg/eOdJW85Abqg/s1600/DSCN3111.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The natural feature in sondage 5 was also cleaned and photographed. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XlxjSNrgYHs/U9uwP6TmmbI/AAAAAAAABCk/rGccDKg2ssk/s1600/DSCN3113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XlxjSNrgYHs/U9uwP6TmmbI/AAAAAAAABCk/rGccDKg2ssk/s1600/DSCN3113.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then sondage 7 was also photographed once all the bricks and clinker had been removed. This revealed the buried soil below these features. This would have been the original turf layer on top of which the clinker was laid.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LfzXC3rbP0w/U9uwYhipheI/AAAAAAAABCw/vId8QgZXg0g/s1600/DSCN3119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LfzXC3rbP0w/U9uwYhipheI/AAAAAAAABCw/vId8QgZXg0g/s1600/DSCN3119.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, just as the rain hit us, sondage 6 was also cleaned and photographed. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qq3oMJNbdxE/U9uwf6Fl6zI/AAAAAAAABC4/pMm5W5ScUgk/s1600/DSCN3127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qq3oMJNbdxE/U9uwf6Fl6zI/AAAAAAAABC4/pMm5W5ScUgk/s1600/DSCN3127.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So, that is it for another year, there is a little bit of finishing off that needs doing on Monday morning and the hut bases need to be back filled, but the majority of work is completed. Over the course of two weeks the team produced over sixty context sheets and twenty drawings! All of these will be compiled in the future into a report that will be published on the <a href="http://www.elmetarchaeology.co.uk/">Elmet Website</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WqGHPEvbPPw/U9uwHSDPikI/AAAAAAAABCY/crfFK2LndnU/s1600/DSCN3118.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WqGHPEvbPPw/U9uwHSDPikI/AAAAAAAABCY/crfFK2LndnU/s1600/DSCN3118.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
All that remains is to say a massive thank you to everyone who gave up their precious time to come and help us excavate the site; we at Elmet truly appreciate all your efforts and hard work and hope that you all had fun!<br />

With it being the penultimate day for the Hickleton Hall project it was all steam ahead with recording today! Jonathan and Jean finished off drawing the stones in sondage 6.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DS1NOrCAhgY/U9palc3-qAI/AAAAAAAABBo/RHl7dNiERhA/s1600/DSCN3100.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DS1NOrCAhgY/U9palc3-qAI/AAAAAAAABBo/RHl7dNiERhA/s1600/DSCN3100.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, Martin and Ant did the same in sondage 7, there is a lot of bricks to draw here, but it's all good practise!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ZahgtTa7ro/U9pagi7wzsI/AAAAAAAABBY/J6dut-w8lS4/s1600/DSCN3101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ZahgtTa7ro/U9pagi7wzsI/AAAAAAAABBY/J6dut-w8lS4/s1600/DSCN3101.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Russ and Anne continued working in sondage 5, near hut base 6. They had discovered a feature underneath the rubble, so it had to be investigated. When it was dug, however, it turned out just to be a natural fissure in the geology. But this shows that these things have to be dealt with in case they are archaeological features!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v8WabUqcYyA/U9paveq34uI/AAAAAAAABB4/0hGs_dBEn0s/s1600/DSCN3103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v8WabUqcYyA/U9paveq34uI/AAAAAAAABB4/0hGs_dBEn0s/s1600/DSCN3103.JPG" height="240" width="320" />
</a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v8WabUqcYyA/U9paveq34uI/AAAAAAAABB4/0hGs_dBEn0s/s1600/DSCN3103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">Over on the other side of the hut bases we had noticed that there was another vehicle inspection pit, so Dickie, Rob and Duncan spent the morning clearing the weeds and moss off the concrete to expose the top layers of the feature.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seSWB_T2F-0/U9pah5nY0zI/AAAAAAAABBg/E3XmJuBdeJk/s1600/DSCN3102.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seSWB_T2F-0/U9pah5nY0zI/AAAAAAAABBg/E3XmJuBdeJk/s1600/DSCN3102.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Unfortunately, we don't have time to fully excavate this feature this season, but we needed to record its location and how big it is in plan.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5u-JsJTBYLM/U9pas2n1yxI/AAAAAAAABBw/OWTSXOEtedY/s1600/DSCN3107.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5u-JsJTBYLM/U9pas2n1yxI/AAAAAAAABBw/OWTSXOEtedY/s1600/DSCN3107.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst all this activity was going on, Lee and Alex recorded the locations of all the hut bases using the Total Station Theodolite (TST; the green machine on the yellow tripod). This electronically records distances and heights so they can be used to create an accurate plan of the whole site when we turn to writing the report.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-77nkAKSqn-c/U9pa1rgRlbI/AAAAAAAABCA/TGqcyQuRfhk/s1600/DSCN3108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-77nkAKSqn-c/U9pa1rgRlbI/AAAAAAAABCA/TGqcyQuRfhk/s1600/DSCN3108.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow will bring more of the same as we close site down for this season, but we still have lots to do!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The day began with a cold start this morning,it looked like it was going to rain, but fortunately it didn't and the sun shone for most of the day! Helen and Glynis continued recording sondage 5, first of all by taking levels.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mRtXvAjPJYI/U9kR3d9s52I/AAAAAAAAA_c/eJOP2PPFnfk/s1600/DSCN3070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mRtXvAjPJYI/U9kR3d9s52I/AAAAAAAAA_c/eJOP2PPFnfk/s1600/DSCN3070.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then completing context sheets for all of the archaeological deposits. When they had finished this in the afternoon they began to remove the brick rubble and found that it was directly sat on the sandstone bedrock.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zCPgjnOdSfU/U9kTN5ibIMI/AAAAAAAABAA/wvPpnUKBPL0/s1600/DSCN3076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zCPgjnOdSfU/U9kTN5ibIMI/AAAAAAAABAA/wvPpnUKBPL0/s1600/DSCN3076.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, we investigated parts of hut base 5, for this we only needed to open a couple of test trenches. The first one, showed that the hut base was made of a layer of concrete surrounded by a double skin of red bricks, so this was recorded.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jswtt1vXNY0/U9kTaYK25UI/AAAAAAAABAI/aR-0wu1T0ko/s1600/DSCN3072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jswtt1vXNY0/U9kTaYK25UI/AAAAAAAABAI/aR-0wu1T0ko/s1600/DSCN3072.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The other test pit at the opposite end of the base showed a little bit more detail, for example it was seen that the brick wall was a couple of courses high. This hut base is very different to the others that we have investigated, having solid brick construction rather than wooden frames.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aZb4NOOUiDA/U9kTfaepgkI/AAAAAAAABAQ/9Qd6VpbZ3v4/s1600/DSCN3081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aZb4NOOUiDA/U9kTfaepgkI/AAAAAAAABAQ/9Qd6VpbZ3v4/s1600/DSCN3081.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While all this was happening, back on hut base 8, Martin and Phil continued to clean the brick step and kerb stones. We have extended the trench to show the full step and see what form the kerb stones take. They are similar to hut base 6 and look like they enclose a small garden!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-usVq-c8QcPA/U9kSBu7LqAI/AAAAAAAAA_s/GHhxNENxT4A/s1600/DSCN3068.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-usVq-c8QcPA/U9kSBu7LqAI/AAAAAAAAA_s/GHhxNENxT4A/s1600/DSCN3068.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They also found this small piece of wire protruding from under the kerb, it appears to be electricity wire or even communications wire and feeds directly under the kerb stones. It will be interesting to see where it leads when we remove the kerb stones.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HDRonAWtCAw/U9kTGCb71mI/AAAAAAAAA_4/xxMYRfqT_TA/s1600/DSCN3078.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HDRonAWtCAw/U9kTGCb71mI/AAAAAAAAA_4/xxMYRfqT_TA/s1600/DSCN3078.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once the sondage was cleaned up, we photographed it ready for recording.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-55SksmK9DXo/U9kT25GnlfI/AAAAAAAABAg/_ANqkAacOyQ/s1600/DSCN3094.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-55SksmK9DXo/U9kT25GnlfI/AAAAAAAABAg/_ANqkAacOyQ/s1600/DSCN3094.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the other side of the hut, Ellie and Jonathan cleaned up the sandstone blocks they had uncovered in sondage 6.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--f6QpUIEv-Y/U9kSAk7ooWI/AAAAAAAAA_k/ZhgSiNn6GLs/s1600/DSCN3069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--f6QpUIEv-Y/U9kSAk7ooWI/AAAAAAAAA_k/ZhgSiNn6GLs/s1600/DSCN3069.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Their cleaning has revealed the clinker path running directly up to the sandstone blocks, these were possibly placed there as a rockery, or even an aid for walking at night as they are light in colour.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-V0IGStZmhCw/U9kTv2pO9-I/AAAAAAAABAY/7Lf3ivXUg_0/s1600/DSCN3089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-V0IGStZmhCw/U9kTv2pO9-I/AAAAAAAABAY/7Lf3ivXUg_0/s1600/DSCN3089.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today was also button bonanza! Martin and Phil found one in their sondage:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RniFG1h6xT8/U9kWH5eeUZI/AAAAAAAABBI/Nmek1XRrANE/s1600/DSCN3077.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RniFG1h6xT8/U9kWH5eeUZI/AAAAAAAABBI/Nmek1XRrANE/s1600/DSCN3077.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
And Ellie found four in hers! At least two of these are marked with the manufacturers' stamp; 'Cheney, B'Ham'</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vReJwUm6woM/U9kVkzybTNI/AAAAAAAABBA/yY81EuUe2EI/s1600/DSCN3071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vReJwUm6woM/U9kVkzybTNI/AAAAAAAABBA/yY81EuUe2EI/s1600/DSCN3071.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So with two days left on site, we are still finding interesting artefacts and features, so who knows what tomorrow will bring!</div>

With the weather still holding up well, the team got a lot done today again. It all began with the clearing off of the topsoil from hut base 8. There wasn't much left to do here, so the job didn't take very long with everyone helping.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6L0kHHL9Y0E/U9e_y0vbGCI/AAAAAAAAA90/5cxOzw-2wpY/s1600/DSCN3032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6L0kHHL9Y0E/U9e_y0vbGCI/AAAAAAAAA90/5cxOzw-2wpY/s1600/DSCN3032.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then came the task of cleaning the top of the concrete with trowels, this job was done by Ellie, Emily and Judy as they had not had the chance to do this before.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Si__RaL09ZE/U9e_2wZt5mI/AAAAAAAAA98/zxphtrwuORQ/s1600/DSCN3033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Si__RaL09ZE/U9e_2wZt5mI/AAAAAAAAA98/zxphtrwuORQ/s1600/DSCN3033.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Soon enough the concrete was cleaned and photographs were taken of the feature. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7-FqFnDA50M/U9e_7RBjfaI/AAAAAAAAA-E/wKnSfX4cenA/s1600/DSCN3037.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7-FqFnDA50M/U9e_7RBjfaI/AAAAAAAAA-E/wKnSfX4cenA/s1600/DSCN3037.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, over at hut base 6 we began the unenviable job of backfilling the topsoil on the concrete. This is to avoid any accidents with the cows that normally populate the field! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HeCdBiNmg1o/U9fAPFXClcI/AAAAAAAAA-M/ZSXrPG8_1oM/s1600/DSCN3034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HeCdBiNmg1o/U9fAPFXClcI/AAAAAAAAA-M/ZSXrPG8_1oM/s1600/DSCN3034.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is a thankless task, but was soon completed. The grass will grow back very quickly over the top of the base and no one will ever know we were there!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Yq9SqPQipU/U9fATI3yHQI/AAAAAAAAA-U/u2N4ibaUuTk/s1600/DSCN3035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Yq9SqPQipU/U9fATI3yHQI/AAAAAAAAA-U/u2N4ibaUuTk/s1600/DSCN3035.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then attention was turned back to hut base 7 and the two sondages on the edges of the base. Rob and Jonathan cleaned out the remaining material of sondage 4.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eKnvCFisMkY/U9fApxbC_uI/AAAAAAAAA-c/nZs9MQN_oz4/s1600/DSCN3051.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eKnvCFisMkY/U9fApxbC_uI/AAAAAAAAA-c/nZs9MQN_oz4/s1600/DSCN3051.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And it was then photographed and levelled. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sCpeP0j14j0/U9fAx5DTkgI/AAAAAAAAA-s/acQLqFczNw0/s1600/DSCN3055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sCpeP0j14j0/U9fAx5DTkgI/AAAAAAAAA-s/acQLqFczNw0/s1600/DSCN3055.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sondage 5, on the other hand, is about half way through to completion. There are only patches of brick rubble in this area, they may be the remains of a step, but that is impossible to tell as the bricks are so fragmentary. However, this still needs to be recorded and that is a task for tomorrow.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tB59Ygyt2f0/U9fAvOezGMI/AAAAAAAAA-k/NjEFHcEhoec/s1600/DSCN3058.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tB59Ygyt2f0/U9fAvOezGMI/AAAAAAAAA-k/NjEFHcEhoec/s1600/DSCN3058.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back at hut base 8, Judy and Ellie began opening sondage 6, this was placed at the eastern end of the hut base to see if there was a brick step here or not. The initial cleaning has only shown us these sandstone blocks. However, these are very similar to the 'rockery' on hut base 7, so it is still interesting to see.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iT1leU_xl44/U9fBN71EKBI/AAAAAAAAA_E/J9Dqz016VsA/s1600/DSCN3064.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iT1leU_xl44/U9fBN71EKBI/AAAAAAAAA_E/J9Dqz016VsA/s1600/DSCN3064.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What was very surprising was sondage 7, opened by Phil, Emily and Jean. This very quickly revealed a brick step.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rf2Zrc10JHY/U9fBK5iUJXI/AAAAAAAAA-8/3acyBwVTbdg/s1600/DSCN3053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rf2Zrc10JHY/U9fBK5iUJXI/AAAAAAAAA-8/3acyBwVTbdg/s1600/DSCN3053.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was very unexpected as it was on the opposite side of the hut compared to the other huts we have already excavated this season. Tomorrow, we will open the sondage a bit more and see how far this feature extends. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RT0_k_Poo7s/U9fBJ3pnu0I/AAAAAAAAA-0/pifsf113zvs/s1600/DSCN3063.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RT0_k_Poo7s/U9fBJ3pnu0I/AAAAAAAAA-0/pifsf113zvs/s1600/DSCN3063.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had no buttons today, but Ellie did recover this very nice pot base from one of the post holes in hut base 8, unfortunately, it has no markings on it, but is still a very nice find!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--791KewdQKM/U9fBTxxHn2I/AAAAAAAAA_M/NZKz_js3AEo/s1600/DSCN3036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--791KewdQKM/U9fBTxxHn2I/AAAAAAAAA_M/NZKz_js3AEo/s1600/DSCN3036.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span id="goog_1464419026">Another day with a lot of activity and happy archaeologists! Tomorrow should bring some interesting results in the two new sondages, so drop in tomorrow and see what comes from them! </span><br />

Today is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This makes it all the more poignant that we are working on a Second World War site, a war that was very much the result of the first. However, such an anniversary didn't slow down the work and it began with the continuing recording left over from Friday, as Ant and Rob finished off their drawing in sondage 4.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FXVkLJbwhyw/U9ZuKBfn6wI/AAAAAAAAA8I/TdJCVu2QNoQ/s1600/DSCN3012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FXVkLJbwhyw/U9ZuKBfn6wI/AAAAAAAAA8I/TdJCVu2QNoQ/s1600/DSCN3012.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, Dickie and Jonathan removed the rest of the remains in sondage 2, to try and find the natural bedrock. It was proving to be rather elusive! It may just be that the buried soil is deeper in this part of the site.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HaNNZecKQro/U9ZuSRY33jI/AAAAAAAAA8Y/YhY_Wasoxqo/s1600/DSCN3014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HaNNZecKQro/U9ZuSRY33jI/AAAAAAAAA8Y/YhY_Wasoxqo/s1600/DSCN3014.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ant and Rob continued their recording by filling in context sheets for each and every archaeological context in the sondage. This has to be carried out and is incredibly important as it is the only record we have of the archaeology once it is removed from the ground. Each sheet records a different context, jargon for each individual deposit in the ground. So in this instance, the bricks are a separate context, the clinker path is another, the sandstones yet another, etc. These are given an individual number and described on the sheets for the later report writing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-up2vzj0wDcg/U9ZuQxQiqCI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/ctonF6KzxhY/s1600/DSCN3015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-up2vzj0wDcg/U9ZuQxQiqCI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/ctonF6KzxhY/s1600/DSCN3015.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst this work continued we started clearing the topsoil off the third hut base (number 8 in our numbering system). This will be the last one we will look at this season.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-baZvCIvVVqo/U9Zuh52KXHI/AAAAAAAAA8g/FcUeZLsKU8w/s1600/DSCN3016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-baZvCIvVVqo/U9Zuh52KXHI/AAAAAAAAA8g/FcUeZLsKU8w/s1600/DSCN3016.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The sondages around hut base 6 were all being finished, Martin and Helen removed the clinker path and sandstone kerb down onto the buried soil.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4PyWjak1zT0/U9Zuv5eycCI/AAAAAAAAA8o/kpudqZezi50/s1600/DSCN3017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4PyWjak1zT0/U9Zuv5eycCI/AAAAAAAAA8o/kpudqZezi50/s1600/DSCN3017.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When they had finished the sondage was photographed for the last time and recorded.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ww92cAJXq8M/U9Zu4M3hkuI/AAAAAAAAA8w/AgwqAtB2Tw8/s1600/DSCN3020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ww92cAJXq8M/U9Zu4M3hkuI/AAAAAAAAA8w/AgwqAtB2Tw8/s1600/DSCN3020.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When Ant and Rob had finished recording sondage 4, they excavated the small post hole we had noticed on the edge of the steps, driven through the clinker surface. This looked like a root, but was probably the hole left from a sign post outside the hut entrance. Possibly to denote which unit was barracked there. However, without the actual post, this is impossible to verify, but it's a nice story!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZUdMi05hfN0/U9ZvGnU4SgI/AAAAAAAAA84/qDkaJlFf8cA/s1600/DSCN3025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZUdMi05hfN0/U9ZvGnU4SgI/AAAAAAAAA84/qDkaJlFf8cA/s1600/DSCN3025.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the end of the afternoon, Dickie and Jonathan had finished their work in sondage 2, so this little trench was photographed and recorded as well.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sT3SSqPZ-d8/U9ZvG09MKAI/AAAAAAAAA88/GrOY9ivAMbY/s1600/DSCN3027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sT3SSqPZ-d8/U9ZvG09MKAI/AAAAAAAAA88/GrOY9ivAMbY/s1600/DSCN3027.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And shirt button number five made its appearance today, it came from the clinker pathway in sondage 4, it seems that the men in that particular hut were good at losing buttons!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A0XFErI1bps/U9ZvMcAyomI/AAAAAAAAA9I/ACRGuhXN26Y/s1600/DSCN3030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A0XFErI1bps/U9ZvMcAyomI/AAAAAAAAA9I/ACRGuhXN26Y/s1600/DSCN3030.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So we have finished three of the sondages around hut base 6 and are well under way with the other two on hut base 7, with the topsoil being cleared off from hut base 8. This week will be busy, but all the work will be done by Friday. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The last day of the first week was another scorcher, we haven't had as much as a single drop of rain all week, which is just fine by us! Work continued in the sondages on hut base 7, with Ant working alone until Rob arrived in the afternoon.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1P6AZREFVqU/U9J6IgXj67I/AAAAAAAAA6M/htGulC1-qpk/s1600/DSCN2971.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1P6AZREFVqU/U9J6IgXj67I/AAAAAAAAA6M/htGulC1-qpk/s1600/DSCN2971.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Over at hut base 6 the team continued cleaning up the various sondages.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6MyPTJX9y7E/U9J6Klmm96I/AAAAAAAAA6U/CDKBT3hW_D4/s1600/DSCN2972.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6MyPTJX9y7E/U9J6Klmm96I/AAAAAAAAA6U/CDKBT3hW_D4/s1600/DSCN2972.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Martin excavated the newly opened sondage on the corner of the hut base, down to the pathway of clinker and sandstone kerbing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oY6lBsCpQOI/U9J6F8r13YI/AAAAAAAAA6E/J2u2Gc5UmUc/s1600/DSCN2973.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oY6lBsCpQOI/U9J6F8r13YI/AAAAAAAAA6E/J2u2Gc5UmUc/s1600/DSCN2973.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst Jonathan and Sue recorded the remains we have uncovered in the western sondage. Here, Jonathan measures various points whilst Sue draws the trench on permatrace.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CDAxHvi3MqU/U9J6WcKsp9I/AAAAAAAAA6k/ROIk17qZ-mI/s1600/DSCN2974.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CDAxHvi3MqU/U9J6WcKsp9I/AAAAAAAAA6k/ROIk17qZ-mI/s1600/DSCN2974.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then the two were taught by Kate to set up and use the theodolite to level the trench.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_cFr0Bpqbaw/U9J6RdiZ89I/AAAAAAAAA6c/hqhaUQf40u4/s1600/DSCN2975.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_cFr0Bpqbaw/U9J6RdiZ89I/AAAAAAAAA6c/hqhaUQf40u4/s1600/DSCN2975.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the end of the morning they had produced this excellent plan drawing of their trench.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0BIjS6F8fxo/U9J6Z2R1lAI/AAAAAAAAA6s/gXv7txwwwgw/s1600/DSCN2976.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0BIjS6F8fxo/U9J6Z2R1lAI/AAAAAAAAA6s/gXv7txwwwgw/s1600/DSCN2976.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Martin's sondage was also cleaned up ready for a photograph. It showed that the kerb of sandstones around the front of the hut stopped at the corner, but still retained what appeared to be garden earth. The clinker pathway was still in evidence as well!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U-wlhfnjrrU/U9J6fi8ut1I/AAAAAAAAA60/ynj-7zL8xxc/s1600/DSCN2983.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U-wlhfnjrrU/U9J6fi8ut1I/AAAAAAAAA60/ynj-7zL8xxc/s1600/DSCN2983.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the addition of Rob in the afternoon, the sondage at the entrance of hut base 7 was cleaned ready for photographing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hCZPMOo-kCs/U9J6mmUHRsI/AAAAAAAAA68/RL3DVSxMlf4/s1600/DSCN2989.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hCZPMOo-kCs/U9J6mmUHRsI/AAAAAAAAA68/RL3DVSxMlf4/s1600/DSCN2989.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can see the brick built step and small rockery made from sandstones.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gUYgUfeqahQ/U9J6pG7bLHI/AAAAAAAAA7E/W8iNa1LImws/s1600/DSCN2993.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gUYgUfeqahQ/U9J6pG7bLHI/AAAAAAAAA7E/W8iNa1LImws/s1600/DSCN2993.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The entrance to this hut base was clearly defined by the brick step, bounded by a jumble of sandstone blocks. These may have been used to fill in the hole left in the ground when they constructed the hut originally. On hut base 6 it appears the men had used this chance to make a small garden, but here it was just filled in with stone.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oQDtGUzLusA/U9J6xR2tsZI/AAAAAAAAA7M/FC_Wtu9Q0sI/s1600/DSCN2994.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oQDtGUzLusA/U9J6xR2tsZI/AAAAAAAAA7M/FC_Wtu9Q0sI/s1600/DSCN2994.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then the trench was recorded as with all the other archaeological remains. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fo5KQ7CZHb0/U9J65Bia8II/AAAAAAAAA7U/026D0a9Ya-k/s1600/DSCN3003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fo5KQ7CZHb0/U9J65Bia8II/AAAAAAAAA7U/026D0a9Ya-k/s1600/DSCN3003.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the entrance sondage on hut base 6 we discovered the cut for the construction of the hut. You can just make out the line, about half way down the trench, where the original greyish soil meets the yellowish sandstone. It appears that the ground was cleared down to the natural bedrock before they began building the huts. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ktj18_xwfIU/U9J68rO-j_I/AAAAAAAAA7c/Z3f_gqL9ZpE/s1600/DSCN3004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ktj18_xwfIU/U9J68rO-j_I/AAAAAAAAA7c/Z3f_gqL9ZpE/s1600/DSCN3004.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also found some great artefacts today, like this button from another undershirt, this was the third one found.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PpGpRXDCKkM/U9J-h1oyXdI/AAAAAAAAA74/-onhXabjpbg/s1600/DSCN2979.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PpGpRXDCKkM/U9J-h1oyXdI/AAAAAAAAA74/-onhXabjpbg/s1600/DSCN2979.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And this press stud, again, from a uniform. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UFJ9Rq37rpQ/U9J-e32KFKI/AAAAAAAAA7s/XvNcyv76BJM/s1600/DSCN2980.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UFJ9Rq37rpQ/U9J-e32KFKI/AAAAAAAAA7s/XvNcyv76BJM/s1600/DSCN2980.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But, by far, the find of the day went to Ant with this, the fourth button and .303 bullet! It has been fired, you can see the rifling grooves on the side. The lack of any damage on the nose indicates that it was fired into a sandbox by a sentry. The sentry would have stood with a chambered round in his rifle and would have discharged it when he came off duty. This may have got stuck on someone's boot as it was found within the brick entrance to hut base 7.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Tb5LsZtx94/U9J-d7sfG-I/AAAAAAAAA7o/IPEOcM8keTY/s1600/DSCN2982.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Tb5LsZtx94/U9J-d7sfG-I/AAAAAAAAA7o/IPEOcM8keTY/s1600/DSCN2982.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another great day, with lots done and found, but we have finished for the weekend. Hopefully the cows will leave our trenches alone and we'll be back on site on Monday! Also check out our <a href="https://twitter.com/ElmetArch">Twitter</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Elmet-Archaeological-Services-Ltd/299127173550083">Facebook</a> for more updates on Elmet and what we are up to!</div>

The heat certainly seems to be staying with us at the moment, it has got hotter each day we have been working. Not that we're complaining, mind you! We arrived at site this morning to find that the cows had kindly left us a few presents overnight. They were probably just interested in the archaeology and decided to have a look for themselves!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G7953IlbZWw/U9Em3VDIkSI/AAAAAAAAA5U/ak4tiaLFUTI/s1600/DSCN2967.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G7953IlbZWw/U9Em3VDIkSI/AAAAAAAAA5U/ak4tiaLFUTI/s1600/DSCN2967.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The geophysics team were out in the woods, making good progress across the site.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o3y3hcxRWIA/U9El1n3u9GI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/YqwBh2ycBz0/s1600/DSCN2941.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o3y3hcxRWIA/U9El1n3u9GI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/YqwBh2ycBz0/s1600/DSCN2941.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, we had cleared the topsoil off hut base 7 and began the task of cleaning the concrete. This also involved cleaning out the post holes on the edge of the base.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Kgiypd1Z8Ps/U9El1Q9NAsI/AAAAAAAAA4U/2fRgt6wzP34/s1600/DSCN2942.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Kgiypd1Z8Ps/U9El1Q9NAsI/AAAAAAAAA4U/2fRgt6wzP34/s1600/DSCN2942.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then the surface was trowelled back, to get all the lumps and clods of earth off.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sCt32h2lCWU/U9El27UJsTI/AAAAAAAAA4k/3XOe09CjDn0/s1600/DSCN2947.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sCt32h2lCWU/U9El27UJsTI/AAAAAAAAA4k/3XOe09CjDn0/s1600/DSCN2947.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The final thing was to take a photograph of the cleaned base for the archive.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rJPlvBKHmIo/U9El7lESALI/AAAAAAAAA4s/EEhOS3onG5k/s1600/DSCN2953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rJPlvBKHmIo/U9El7lESALI/AAAAAAAAA4s/EEhOS3onG5k/s1600/DSCN2953.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back over at hut base 6, Jonathan and Sue had finished cleaning their sondage down to the clinker pathway and the remains of the brick edge. So, this was also photographed for the records.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YqNf2gRYF8k/U9EmhkB6kwI/AAAAAAAAA48/1lr4PyuYmD4/s1600/DSCN2944.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YqNf2gRYF8k/U9EmhkB6kwI/AAAAAAAAA48/1lr4PyuYmD4/s1600/DSCN2944.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They then spent the rest of the day drawing the features in the trench.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kv_4Y0vq44/U9Emg0aCd2I/AAAAAAAAA40/lbHCP9qw-5Q/s1600/DSCN2948.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kv_4Y0vq44/U9Emg0aCd2I/AAAAAAAAA40/lbHCP9qw-5Q/s1600/DSCN2948.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, Jan and Vince had finished their recording so were being taught by Lauren how to level their drawing. We take levels across a drawing to show how high above sea level a particular point is, this helps us place the archaeology in a geographical position.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cqW81mfY9R0/U9EmiQoqu-I/AAAAAAAAA5A/_bb1vlTFfIQ/s1600/DSCN2966.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cqW81mfY9R0/U9EmiQoqu-I/AAAAAAAAA5A/_bb1vlTFfIQ/s1600/DSCN2966.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Their drawing was then finished off and it looked excellent: </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EPw_i-QmDBY/U9EmogA1sxI/AAAAAAAAA5M/RybqkjHmA7k/s1600/DSCN2969.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EPw_i-QmDBY/U9EmogA1sxI/AAAAAAAAA5M/RybqkjHmA7k/s1600/DSCN2969.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst all this was happening, Glynis began work on another sondage at the corner of base 6, this is to see if the small border and path go all the way around the hut base or are confined to the front only.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fBYdFPIoXsg/U9EnQcarS5I/AAAAAAAAA5c/Uc3rCwJoKSE/s1600/DSCN2961.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fBYdFPIoXsg/U9EnQcarS5I/AAAAAAAAA5c/Uc3rCwJoKSE/s1600/DSCN2961.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back at base 7, Ant and Rob began opening a new sondage at the eastern end of the base, to see if there was a brick step here as well.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wZjIy0lhy-s/U9EnXh72QsI/AAAAAAAAA5s/PdKP6COytIU/s1600/DSCN2962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wZjIy0lhy-s/U9EnXh72QsI/AAAAAAAAA5s/PdKP6COytIU/s1600/DSCN2962.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ange and Russ did the same on the western edge of base 7.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--XmWhEsFNMI/U9EnWWd-VfI/AAAAAAAAA5k/F7-Rh6Cqp5w/s1600/DSCN2964.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--XmWhEsFNMI/U9EnWWd-VfI/AAAAAAAAA5k/F7-Rh6Cqp5w/s1600/DSCN2964.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the end of the day the eastern sondage began to show signs of a brick step, so it was decided to expand this trench to two meters wide. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4b2p7SZPmJU/U9EnboFZG3I/AAAAAAAAA50/I4R6kCOsW1o/s1600/DSCN2968.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4b2p7SZPmJU/U9EnboFZG3I/AAAAAAAAA50/I4R6kCOsW1o/s1600/DSCN2968.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow should show us if there are more brick steps around base 7, and what happens with the kerbing on base 6. It's getting very interesting, so, stay tuned for more updates tomorrow as we forge ahead with the work, also check out our <a href="https://twitter.com/ElmetArch">Twitter</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Elmet-Archaeological-Services-Ltd/299127173550083">Facebook</a> for more updates on Elmet and what we are up to!</div>

We had another scorching day today, which also allowed us to be really busy on site. In the morning we had a visit from the Oaks Day Care Centre History Group. First, they laid out tapes for the geophysical survey in the woods.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0ELnTRGWEVY/U8_a61s6UJI/AAAAAAAAA2A/oShTnTnmqR4/s1600/DSCN2915.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0ELnTRGWEVY/U8_a61s6UJI/AAAAAAAAA2A/oShTnTnmqR4/s1600/DSCN2915.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then helped us with the actual survey, taking it in turns to use the resistivity array.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u1B0v4GuKQM/U8_bDIxkSPI/AAAAAAAAA2I/bsPPYhTtopc/s1600/DSCN2917.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u1B0v4GuKQM/U8_bDIxkSPI/AAAAAAAAA2I/bsPPYhTtopc/s1600/DSCN2917.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They came for lunch with us back at HQ then spent the afternoon clearing off the topsoil from the next hut base we intend to record, number seven.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OQ1gEYa4KLo/U8_bdtjcqlI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/_RBkvisv_vw/s1600/DSCN2926.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OQ1gEYa4KLo/U8_bdtjcqlI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/_RBkvisv_vw/s1600/DSCN2926.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, Philip continued his recording of the summer-house remains. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YPbLworPZ8c/U8_btdRxOmI/AAAAAAAAA2Y/Mp7V73bp-go/s1600/DSCN2916.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YPbLworPZ8c/U8_btdRxOmI/AAAAAAAAA2Y/Mp7V73bp-go/s1600/DSCN2916.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And back at hut base six, another sondage was opened. A sondage is small trench intended to answer a specific question. This was dug at the western end of the concrete base to see if there was another entrance to the building along with the one we found yesterday.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NHY3E4MiSyI/U8_cEWZRWqI/AAAAAAAAA2o/SuqXCzx9IJQ/s1600/DSCN2909.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NHY3E4MiSyI/U8_cEWZRWqI/AAAAAAAAA2o/SuqXCzx9IJQ/s1600/DSCN2909.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jonathan and Sue worked hard to reduce the level of this small trench down to the cinder paths and this is still a work in progress! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OuDnhiZhRmk/U8_cCfJfBQI/AAAAAAAAA2g/lUEQHz9hAxk/s1600/DSCN2912.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OuDnhiZhRmk/U8_cCfJfBQI/AAAAAAAAA2g/lUEQHz9hAxk/s1600/DSCN2912.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the brick step we found yesterday it was decided to open the western sondage a little bit more, so the length was increased to two meters long. This revealed more bricks and something more surprising!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0iL2xiscZIY/U8_cdcGz5CI/AAAAAAAAA24/l5SZCZJhNng/s1600/DSCN2910.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0iL2xiscZIY/U8_cdcGz5CI/AAAAAAAAA24/l5SZCZJhNng/s1600/DSCN2910.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The brick step was bounded by two sandstone block kerbs, both of which appeared to enclose a small patch of garden soil. It is not unheard of that the huts in the camps were surrounded by a small plot of garden, to make them look nice. It appears that this is what we have here!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4yTCNJY8gT4/U8_cbMvrvSI/AAAAAAAAA2w/coYmCJ-feRo/s1600/DSCN2923.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4yTCNJY8gT4/U8_cbMvrvSI/AAAAAAAAA2w/coYmCJ-feRo/s1600/DSCN2923.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was the also the remains of a cinder pathway leading into the hut's entrance, so all these features needed recording. We stopped excavation at this point and began the drawing and writing descriptions of all the archaeological features. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7TPc5sVoax0/U8_dgTrBgSI/AAAAAAAAA38/qyExFk6lzC8/s1600/DSCN2928.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7TPc5sVoax0/U8_dgTrBgSI/AAAAAAAAA38/qyExFk6lzC8/s1600/DSCN2928.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As all this activity was going on, Ant and Martin began work on a small feature associated with hut base six. It was a long concrete rectangular pit that needed investigation.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b5Kzl66epP8/U8_c8DafXeI/AAAAAAAAA3E/u9MMFdRdMcM/s1600/DSCN2908.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b5Kzl66epP8/U8_c8DafXeI/AAAAAAAAA3E/u9MMFdRdMcM/s1600/DSCN2908.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As the soil was cleared from the hole it became clearer that it was a vehicle inspection pit, one where a vehicle would drive over the top and a man would work in, without having to raise the vehicle off the ground. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HyiG5Hhhccc/U8_c_a09nDI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/smd-rcVpRo4/s1600/DSCN2911.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HyiG5Hhhccc/U8_c_a09nDI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/smd-rcVpRo4/s1600/DSCN2911.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This made sense as we know the huts by the side of this feature were for the transport personnel, so they were living and working in close proximity. As more of the feature was revealed it became apparent that it had been constructed with corrugated iron sheeting, with mixed concrete poured into a pre-dug hole. The corrugated iron had either been removed or rotted away, but its impression was still there.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-anZed4FXnLI/U8_c-2tqBNI/AAAAAAAAA3M/LnyTknW4aeM/s1600/DSCN2913.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-anZed4FXnLI/U8_c-2tqBNI/AAAAAAAAA3M/LnyTknW4aeM/s1600/DSCN2913.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also found the remains of an vehicle axle that had been dumped in the backfill of the pit. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-08Z98aSrZi4/U8_dHXT0bmI/AAAAAAAAA3c/Mts2bcLAlns/s1600/DSCN2919.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-08Z98aSrZi4/U8_dHXT0bmI/AAAAAAAAA3c/Mts2bcLAlns/s1600/DSCN2919.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then this small feature was cleaned and photographed. It's quite important to record this, as it does not appear on a war time plan of the map that we have seen. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HqnRl4H9kZo/U8_dKj6XDkI/AAAAAAAAA3k/ee7itB3gTBo/s1600/DSCN2933.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HqnRl4H9kZo/U8_dKj6XDkI/AAAAAAAAA3k/ee7itB3gTBo/s1600/DSCN2933.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was also some graffiti scratched into the concrete as it was drying, it's difficult to make out but it possibly says 'H I HILIES' and 'J D'. Possibly the men who poured the concrete. We wondered if they ever thought their names would become part of an archaeological excavation! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LBZ6EBzX-gs/U8_dO6q6XXI/AAAAAAAAA3s/ow2_Dv3LGYw/s1600/DSCN2938.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LBZ6EBzX-gs/U8_dO6q6XXI/AAAAAAAAA3s/ow2_Dv3LGYw/s1600/DSCN2938.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The vehicle pit was fully recorded by Ant, Martin and Lauren then we had to back fill the feature in case any cows fell in it over night! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7WLjgMhcbBQ/U8_dTX6JgrI/AAAAAAAAA30/_cKhwEPTmU4/s1600/DSCN2939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7WLjgMhcbBQ/U8_dTX6JgrI/AAAAAAAAA30/_cKhwEPTmU4/s1600/DSCN2939.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, we had a really busy day with a lot happening today. Following on from the button that was found yesterday, our friend, 'Concrete' Chris Kolonko confirmed that it is from a 'Collarless Shirt Other Ranks'; The official designation of an army undershirt. <a href="http://www.kateadeladeillustration.com/">Kate Brown</a> also found some time to make a drawing of the button and here it is:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NJqIDVfnrW4/U8_dltNLYZI/AAAAAAAAA4E/Jbdp49Kr-34/s1600/button.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NJqIDVfnrW4/U8_dltNLYZI/AAAAAAAAA4E/Jbdp49Kr-34/s1600/button.jpg" height="136" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The team were greeted by another beautiful day today, the sun was shining again, all great weather for some great archaeology! The day began with clearing off the concrete of the hut base from yesterday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LboBWIj_75U/U86FuZOtUQI/AAAAAAAAA0g/V_fRkZPX_1o/s1600/DSCN2878.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LboBWIj_75U/U86FuZOtUQI/AAAAAAAAA0g/V_fRkZPX_1o/s1600/DSCN2878.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It didn't take long before all the topsoil was removed and we could start to see the full extents of the concreted base.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IVDvVhqvUKE/U86FqgK9j0I/AAAAAAAAA0U/MRth5ePfiuQ/s1600/DSCN2879.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IVDvVhqvUKE/U86FqgK9j0I/AAAAAAAAA0U/MRth5ePfiuQ/s1600/DSCN2879.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The base is ringed by post holes, like this rectangular one that Ant found:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1X7K-MNvi1I/U86FqPRkUMI/AAAAAAAAA0Q/30byiQo0lw8/s1600/DSCN2880.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1X7K-MNvi1I/U86FqPRkUMI/AAAAAAAAA0Q/30byiQo0lw8/s1600/DSCN2880.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So the team sat down to clearing out each and everyone of them! There are over twenty in total, some of them had the remains of the wooden posts and nails still in situ.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ps2PuHDoIbg/U86F7iGfJrI/AAAAAAAAA0o/mPCJeloRNQw/s1600/DSCN2881.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ps2PuHDoIbg/U86F7iGfJrI/AAAAAAAAA0o/mPCJeloRNQw/s1600/DSCN2881.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The cleaning still wasn't finished, however, and it was then time to trowel clean the top of the base, this removes all the small clods of earth that have been trampled onto the concrete by us working on it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z01Nfxq-eb4/U86F9fjjKrI/AAAAAAAAA0w/gISZVqR-9lg/s1600/DSCN2885.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z01Nfxq-eb4/U86F9fjjKrI/AAAAAAAAA0w/gISZVqR-9lg/s1600/DSCN2885.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This cleaning didn't take long and the hut base was so clean that you could almost eat your dinner off it!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KJ7TUXP6GSo/U86GXjZksuI/AAAAAAAAA1I/MbOlf1qbZPs/s1600/DSCN2889.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KJ7TUXP6GSo/U86GXjZksuI/AAAAAAAAA1I/MbOlf1qbZPs/s1600/DSCN2889.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The the site photos were taken of the base, these will be put into the report when all the work is finished. The scales are one meter long.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C0W3SXnmaYQ/U86GqMOwzyI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/zRDeMYSqit0/s1600/DSCN2893.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C0W3SXnmaYQ/U86GqMOwzyI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/zRDeMYSqit0/s1600/DSCN2893.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another reason for the cleaning is that small features may be missed, such as these wavy lines, created by corrugated iron sheets being pressed into the concrete when it was wet. You can just make them out as faint lines below the scale rod and above the lip of the concrete.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MFADFz3qK-w/U86HA4Hpz5I/AAAAAAAAA1Y/NnVvmG3SD3o/s1600/DSCN2902.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MFADFz3qK-w/U86HA4Hpz5I/AAAAAAAAA1Y/NnVvmG3SD3o/s1600/DSCN2902.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, we turned our attention to the remains of the Summer House, to the south of the camp. This has fallen into a bad state of repair, so we are going to record it as part of the project. Here Martin and Ant begin cleaning the floor surface, so it can be drawn and recorded fully.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1YrxXN5ZFRw/U86GEiOCeTI/AAAAAAAAA04/VodIrb9d8_Q/s1600/DSCN2888.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1YrxXN5ZFRw/U86GEiOCeTI/AAAAAAAAA04/VodIrb9d8_Q/s1600/DSCN2888.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It didn't take long before they came down onto a set of flag stones that were still in good condition. Philip will record this structure, as he has a background in architecture!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sKUpZhegsrU/U86GUrNN_QI/AAAAAAAAA1A/FuN5tSFxlqY/s1600/DSCN2892.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sKUpZhegsrU/U86GUrNN_QI/AAAAAAAAA1A/FuN5tSFxlqY/s1600/DSCN2892.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back at the base, Helen and Vince began excavated a small trench, known as a sondage, to attempt to understand the way in which the base was constructed. This small trench will save us digging a larger trench around the entire base and will answer the questions we are asking.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3gpUEtCIqpM/U86HDxdWV-I/AAAAAAAAA1g/prkNT4gXOlI/s1600/DSCN2904.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3gpUEtCIqpM/U86HDxdWV-I/AAAAAAAAA1g/prkNT4gXOlI/s1600/DSCN2904.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Very quickly they hit a set of bricks that had been used as an entrance step and a clinker surface, very similar to the paths that we encountered last year on the site. The entrance is exactly where we thought it might be, but was not visible on the previous hut base we excavated last year.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seJYDtGYAy4/U86HROpDIXI/AAAAAAAAA1w/4Js6-jaa41k/s1600/DSCN2906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-seJYDtGYAy4/U86HROpDIXI/AAAAAAAAA1w/4Js6-jaa41k/s1600/DSCN2906.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It was from the clinker layer that the find of the day was recovered; this British army shirt button! It was right on top of the path level and was probably swept out of the hut after falling off a soldier's shirt!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ispSGvJGMIc/U86HLqCmiTI/AAAAAAAAA1o/GjKnzzZSrco/s1600/DSCN2905.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ispSGvJGMIc/U86HLqCmiTI/AAAAAAAAA1o/GjKnzzZSrco/s1600/DSCN2905.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, a busy day all in all, with lots of great results and lots of work done. There is more to come from this exciting project and we will be updating this blog daily, also check out our <a href="https://twitter.com/ElmetArch">Twitter</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Elmet-Archaeological-Services-Ltd/299127173550083">Facebook</a> for more updates on Elmet and what we are up to!</div>

It is almost a year to the day that we began the <a href="http://elmetarchaeology.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/22-july-2013-hickleton-hall-pow-project.html">Hickleton Hall POW camp project</a> in 2013, so expectations were high for this new season of works! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The background on the project can be found by <a href="http://www.elmetarchaeology.co.uk/hickletonhallcamp.html">CLICKING HERE</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had a lot of volunteers ready and willing to lend a hand this year, so immediately the team began work on uncovering one of the many hut bases that cover the site.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MlLPBbU7Xtg/U802jkZTk_I/AAAAAAAAAzg/Gmjqxqs5ypA/s1600/DSCN2871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MlLPBbU7Xtg/U802jkZTk_I/AAAAAAAAAzg/Gmjqxqs5ypA/s1600/DSCN2871.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It wasn't long before we saw our first glimpse of concrete, which looked very similar to the hut base that was uncovered last year.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d-NOqQo6hDc/U802htT4FxI/AAAAAAAAAzU/BzN_GZ4DdP4/s1600/DSCN2872.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d-NOqQo6hDc/U802htT4FxI/AAAAAAAAAzU/BzN_GZ4DdP4/s1600/DSCN2872.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, we decided to continue searching for any underground features that may have been connected to secret wartime operations on the site. We intend on doing this through the use of geophysical surveys across parts of the site. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8r8ZATdRTbM/U802gG8OiII/AAAAAAAAAzQ/KwMW44bAWJQ/s1600/DSCN2873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8r8ZATdRTbM/U802gG8OiII/AAAAAAAAAzQ/KwMW44bAWJQ/s1600/DSCN2873.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The volunteers worked hard all morning and got large parts of the topsoil off the hut base, as you can see it looks quite plain, with very little in the surface of the concrete. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B4NrPBl73wg/U802mtNOx_I/AAAAAAAAAzo/aMyWRt1t7Mc/s1600/DSCN2874.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B4NrPBl73wg/U802mtNOx_I/AAAAAAAAAzo/aMyWRt1t7Mc/s1600/DSCN2874.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Early afternoon saw the start of the geophysical survey and two grids finished! A great start!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8pczzlSjBTI/U8020VNMWLI/AAAAAAAAA0A/ib9ghYoWAeQ/s1600/DSCN2876.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8pczzlSjBTI/U8020VNMWLI/AAAAAAAAA0A/ib9ghYoWAeQ/s1600/DSCN2876.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The morning will see us removing the remaining turf from the top of the concrete. Then we will have to clean up the surface and the edges of the structure to see if there are any post holes or other clues to the construction of the hut.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bdYOIB7kRBQ/U802xWVNxYI/AAAAAAAAAz4/Hc60e55uIRM/s1600/DSCN2877.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bdYOIB7kRBQ/U802xWVNxYI/AAAAAAAAAz4/Hc60e55uIRM/s1600/DSCN2877.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The find of the day was this embossed clay pipe bowl. Obviously, it is not from the Second World War, but shows that the site has been used since the post-medieval times and these kind of finds are to be expected mixed in with the soil!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTAwwFn-n8E/U802r6qgeAI/AAAAAAAAAzw/eZktPLO_fJc/s1600/DSCN2875.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTAwwFn-n8E/U802r6qgeAI/AAAAAAAAAzw/eZktPLO_fJc/s1600/DSCN2875.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first day saw a great deal of work being done and a lot of turf moved by the volunteers. We even had two lads, Jack and Harry, our youngest participants at ten and six and a half years old. Unfortunately the lads won't be joining us again, but they were really good workers and really enjoyed themselves!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

31st May 2014 saw the successful Dearne Valley Archaeology Day, Elmet held their now annual conference at the <a href="http://www.dearne-coll.ac.uk/">Dearne Valley College</a> and we can say that this has been our best one yet!It was well attended and the talks were varied and incredibly interesting and well delivered. Not only this but the attendees had several stalls to browse, starting with our very own <a href="http://www.elmetarchaeology.co.uk/index.html">Elmet Archaeological Services</a> stall:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.elmetarchaeology.co.uk/dearnevalleyarchaeologygroup.html">Dearne Valley Archaeology Group</a> also had a display to show what they offered: </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also had <a href="http://www.aswyas.com/archaeology-default.htm">West Yorkshire Archaeological Services</a> and their stand which demonstrated their community archaeology outreach programs!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.kateadeladeillustration.com/">Kate Adelaide Archaeological Illustration</a> put everyone else to shame with her fully interactive display!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had a good choice of archaeology and history book from ON Books:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o8Vjjwnz_LA/U4oWFBATSBI/AAAAAAAAAwY/7ISESbtZJPI/s1600/IMG_5504.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o8Vjjwnz_LA/U4oWFBATSBI/AAAAAAAAAwY/7ISESbtZJPI/s1600/IMG_5504.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And loads of information about the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/481223375303566/">Rothwell Charnel Chapel Project</a>:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dcj9pmoYquk/U4oZ3MInMuI/AAAAAAAAAy0/4TGqbE2aS9g/s1600/DSCN2427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dcj9pmoYquk/U4oZ3MInMuI/AAAAAAAAAy0/4TGqbE2aS9g/s1600/DSCN2427.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ten o'clock soon rolled round and the audience took their places:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A4pwjZrVInA/U4oVu1zDMAI/AAAAAAAAAvo/rALIuiMGbCc/s1600/IMG_5495.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A4pwjZrVInA/U4oVu1zDMAI/AAAAAAAAAvo/rALIuiMGbCc/s1600/IMG_5495.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dr Lauren McIntyre hosted the day and began with a short introduction to start us off:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-thi2w74Q7qw/U4oV0W7aB0I/AAAAAAAAAvw/bHFQ9YF9JGg/s1600/IMG_5496.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-thi2w74Q7qw/U4oV0W7aB0I/AAAAAAAAAvw/bHFQ9YF9JGg/s1600/IMG_5496.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
First up was Christine Rawson talking about Elmet Archaeology and how we formed and what we have achieved in that time:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9oapJi1WjFQ/U4oZtEZCIcI/AAAAAAAAAys/h4cxjJSz2Xg/s1600/DSCN2433.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9oapJi1WjFQ/U4oZtEZCIcI/AAAAAAAAAys/h4cxjJSz2Xg/s1600/DSCN2433.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a double act with Alex Sotheran who spoke briefly about the recent work at Silverwood and also fielded questions from the audience:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aVrzSNgtT5s/U4oV25ViZaI/AAAAAAAAAv4/BevWvFdvkGI/s1600/IMG_5498.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aVrzSNgtT5s/U4oV25ViZaI/AAAAAAAAAv4/BevWvFdvkGI/s1600/IMG_5498.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our second speaker was David Menear who explained the positive aspects of blogging in archaeology. He covered some very interesting and thought provoking points. Read David's blog <a href="http://thesebonesofmine.wordpress.com/">HERE</a>.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i_C05uxh3N8/U4oXgJYDSiI/AAAAAAAAAyk/HkaVF8mQOXE/s1600/IMG_5499.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i_C05uxh3N8/U4oXgJYDSiI/AAAAAAAAAyk/HkaVF8mQOXE/s320/IMG_5499.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Peter Clegg of <a href="http://www.wentworthcastle.org/">Wentworth Castle Gardens</a> (neither in Wentworth or a castle!) gave a very good talk on the history and archaeology of this excellent site. It is great to see such enthusiasm in the heritage sector!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A59VEnIpImE/U4oWMEsgZ1I/AAAAAAAAAwo/5GmbJwDqROg/s1600/IMG_5507.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A59VEnIpImE/U4oWMEsgZ1I/AAAAAAAAAwo/5GmbJwDqROg/s1600/IMG_5507.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another historical approach was demonstrated in the <a href="http://www.gencem.org/">Sheffield General Cemetery</a> presentation given by Andrew Whitman. It is good to see these historical sites that are not always known about.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YqlDhNH4feE/U4oWPh9xgeI/AAAAAAAAAww/JEjLzrE7PUc/s1600/IMG_5508.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YqlDhNH4feE/U4oWPh9xgeI/AAAAAAAAAww/JEjLzrE7PUc/s1600/IMG_5508.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In keeping with relatively recent archaeological remains was Dr Rachel Reader's presentation on excavations on the New Bailey Prison in Salford, Manchester, carried out by the <a href="http://www.salford.ac.uk/cst/research/applied-archaeology">Centre of Applied Archaeology</a>. It gave us an intriguing insight into life in an 18th Century Prison.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_zwC1qYrdmQ/U4oWaupusZI/AAAAAAAAAxM/Sk8LaVuDILA/s1600/IMG_5511.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_zwC1qYrdmQ/U4oWaupusZI/AAAAAAAAAxM/Sk8LaVuDILA/s1600/IMG_5511.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The final talk for the morning session was the <a href="http://www.arch.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a>'s Victoria Donnelly and her study into the grey literature reports that archaeological companies produce. The results were fascinating to see and it proved to be a informative study and one to watch!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KaoosH-9vtg/U4oWd1jriII/AAAAAAAAAxU/yyDyyKduk3g/s1600/IMG_5512.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KaoosH-9vtg/U4oWd1jriII/AAAAAAAAAxU/yyDyyKduk3g/s1600/IMG_5512.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Then it was time for lunch! And what a spread it was, Jo and Kayla really excelled themselves with the buffet!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LW-5KU-hc6U/U4oWTiYT0RI/AAAAAAAAAw4/tOYvfNzCjNc/s1600/IMG_5509.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LW-5KU-hc6U/U4oWTiYT0RI/AAAAAAAAAw4/tOYvfNzCjNc/s1600/IMG_5509.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
How many other archaeology conferences offer chocolate covered marshmellows stuck in a pineapple?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EcVle5QAWbk/U4oWqZdyPhI/AAAAAAAAAxw/i7tgJXFmedA/s1600/IMG_5516.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EcVle5QAWbk/U4oWqZdyPhI/AAAAAAAAAxw/i7tgJXFmedA/s1600/IMG_5516.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The stalls were well attended during the lunch break giving people a chance to mingle and chat.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aru8YPTGXzE/U4oWlhZ_8QI/AAAAAAAAAxk/UG1JQ5xt9Rk/s1600/IMG_5515.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aru8YPTGXzE/U4oWlhZ_8QI/AAAAAAAAAxk/UG1JQ5xt9Rk/s1600/IMG_5515.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With everybody fed and watered it was time to take their seats for the afternoon session.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uDQubm8W22s/U4oWhi1aAhI/AAAAAAAAAxc/soy7-WY-AB4/s1600/IMG_5514.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uDQubm8W22s/U4oWhi1aAhI/AAAAAAAAAxc/soy7-WY-AB4/s1600/IMG_5514.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Which began with Colin Merrony of the University of Sheffield and his talk on the medieval church, Beauchief Abbey and the work he has carried out there.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zhFgtseq0SI/U4oWtleedhI/AAAAAAAAAx0/Vh3v5wAMKDs/s1600/IMG_5517.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zhFgtseq0SI/U4oWtleedhI/AAAAAAAAAx0/Vh3v5wAMKDs/s1600/IMG_5517.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Staying with a medieval theme was Andy Gaunt of <a href="http://www.mercian-as.co.uk/">Mercian Archaeological Services</a>, who gave us a very funny and interesting history of Sherwood Forest and demonstrated some exciting plans for community archaeology work in the area! Certainly another project to watch!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQFpJnLX4TI/U4oWxGp2-VI/AAAAAAAAAx8/Md3k8NN3YpI/s1600/IMG_5519.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQFpJnLX4TI/U4oWxGp2-VI/AAAAAAAAAx8/Md3k8NN3YpI/s1600/IMG_5519.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Moving down south and back in time was Jessica Bryan of <a href="http://www.museumoflondonarchaeology.org.uk/">Museum Of London Archaeology</a> and her exciting presentation on recent work on a major Roman site in central London, the Bloomberg excavations. The material and information recovered on that site were mind blowing!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6kSQFfFkfw4/U4oW0yAysRI/AAAAAAAAAyE/goSjlt8i6Ds/s1600/IMG_5520.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6kSQFfFkfw4/U4oW0yAysRI/AAAAAAAAAyE/goSjlt8i6Ds/s1600/IMG_5520.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
David Connelley of <a href="http://www.bajr.org/">British Archaeological Jobs Resource</a> brought his enthusiasm and highly entertaining personality to deliver an excellent talk on the results of the <a href="http://www.rampartscotland.co.uk/">Rampart Scotland</a> community project which has been dating hill forts and which had some surprising results.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr3VsvHJz8o/U4oW6LqHFAI/AAAAAAAAAyM/zRDF4h9VNjs/s1600/IMG_5521.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr3VsvHJz8o/U4oW6LqHFAI/AAAAAAAAAyM/zRDF4h9VNjs/s1600/IMG_5521.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Equally entertaining (it must be something in the Scottish water...) was Dr Campbell Price of the <a href="http://www.museum.manchester.ac.uk/">Manchester Museum</a> and the history of representation of the mummified remains there.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sNInQk-DlFQ/U4oW-v6YJsI/AAAAAAAAAyU/ay65GRTTY5c/s1600/IMG_5522.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sNInQk-DlFQ/U4oW-v6YJsI/AAAAAAAAAyU/ay65GRTTY5c/s1600/IMG_5522.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Staying in a similar vein was the final talk of the afternoon was Professor Joann Fletcher and Dr Stephen Buckley of the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/archaeology/">University of York</a>. Their pioneering work with non intrusive sampling was really impressive and has begun to answer a lot of questions in the field of Egyptology and beyond!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-70MQwvsWlwE/U4oXBafS1yI/AAAAAAAAAyY/laZZ5OFvgzo/s1600/IMG_5523.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-70MQwvsWlwE/U4oXBafS1yI/AAAAAAAAAyY/laZZ5OFvgzo/s1600/IMG_5523.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then it was all over, a fantastic day with some really interesting and stimulating presentations, with both a wide variety of subjects and geographical locations. The staff at Elmet would like to say a big thank you for all who attended, both speakers and audience, for making it such a fantastic and enjoyable day. Also thank you to the volunteers who gave their valuable time to allow things to run smoothly and made sure everyone was looked after! Here's to DVAD 2015!</div>

We were rained off again on Saturday, so today was our last day on site. The weather held off and we had glorious sunshine all day long, hardly a cloud in the sky! It was perfect as we had twelve grids left to survey and would need all day if we were to finish on time!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qUvPuyga6zs/U157zJBuMoI/AAAAAAAAAus/gENcldj2kvQ/s1600/DSCN2217.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qUvPuyga6zs/U157zJBuMoI/AAAAAAAAAus/gENcldj2kvQ/s1600/DSCN2217.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sue came along to help us and without her help it would have been a difficult task to get finished. Working hard we were all done by three o'clock!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-42aTg54AnZI/U15758pC6vI/AAAAAAAAAu8/rq32OzWC2dM/s1600/DSCN2218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-42aTg54AnZI/U15758pC6vI/AAAAAAAAAu8/rq32OzWC2dM/s1600/DSCN2218.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the site keeps throwing up new items of interest, like this concrete plinth for one of the Armstrong Huts that would have populated the site when the Pals were there. This was found close to the tree line and indicates that there a lot more huts than we had first anticipated. Not only this, but we also noted that an area near the woods was also giving out readings like a concrete pad. There is a whole lot more to explore here!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PTxkcQnfTvg/U157umZLU-I/AAAAAAAAAuk/d5F7WSswfWs/s1600/DSCN2215.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PTxkcQnfTvg/U157umZLU-I/AAAAAAAAAuk/d5F7WSswfWs/s1600/DSCN2215.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, that's it, we are all finished for this project. The only thing that remains is to analyse the data, digitise the archive and create the final report. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has been Elmet's pleasure to work on the Silverwood Scout Camp site and this project would not have been possible without the gracious support and patience of Mr Paul Unsworth. Also a big thank you goes to the Heritage Lottery Fund for funding the project in the first instance. Further thanks go to The Dad's Army of Silverwood Scout Camp for clearing away our spoil heaps!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We would also like to sincerely thank all those volunteers who gave up their precious time to take part in the project, namely; Sandra Andrews, Terence Andrews, Sue Ashton, Paul Bain, Anne Brown, Philip Brown, John Camm, Helen Coe, Syd Dyson, Andrew Edwards, Russell French, Isabelle Heyerdahl-King, Rebecca Hill, Jan H., Chris Kolonko, Rebecca Newell, Geoffrey Northcliffe, Graham Perkins, Abbie Pettinger, Jo Pettinger, Glenis Ravenscroft, Mark Ravenscroft, Duncan Simpson, Carole Sotheran, David Sotheran, Patrick Sykes, Sue Worthington, Dane Wright and Stephen Walker. Without you, this would not have been possible! </div>

The day began with a light drizzle, but it wasn't heavy enough to put us off initially, so Lauren and Concrete Chris continued recording the second concrete base. Here Chris takes measurements off the base line whilst Lauren draws the points on permatrace waterproof paper.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H9LA4inYT0k/U1plZd3gixI/AAAAAAAAAt8/C8lukHDDhes/s1600/DSCN2197.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H9LA4inYT0k/U1plZd3gixI/AAAAAAAAAt8/C8lukHDDhes/s1600/DSCN2197.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the geophysics team continued to search for anomalies underground! They were running their grids over what could be very interesting areas this morning...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h7HV7pK9_hs/U1plfoIRZYI/AAAAAAAAAuM/2JHAhLS2Xhk/s1600/DSCN2198.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h7HV7pK9_hs/U1plfoIRZYI/AAAAAAAAAuM/2JHAhLS2Xhk/s1600/DSCN2198.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...The area in question is this patch of ground between the third base and the clump of tree in the centre of the picture. In the trees at the bottom are the remains of at least one more ablution base. The concrete can be seen just under the foliage. However, there are two flat areas immediately between the trees and the base we have uncovered. It is very likely that these two areas have further concrete bases under them and if that is the case they may be in very good condition! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yO9oZ7DjG1s/U1plcntOA5I/AAAAAAAAAuE/d1l9hb5usqk/s1600/DSCN2199.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yO9oZ7DjG1s/U1plcntOA5I/AAAAAAAAAuE/d1l9hb5usqk/s1600/DSCN2199.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our hard work was short lived though, as just after lunch the heavens opened and it began pouring with rain again, too much for us to continue with the resistivity survey so we called a halt to the work. There are now only twelve grids remaining to survey, along with a small amount of recording left to do and we will be finished very soon!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GfCsmCzU8fM/U1plkH4uOPI/AAAAAAAAAuU/SXTcyEM2sPk/s1600/DSCN2201.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GfCsmCzU8fM/U1plkH4uOPI/AAAAAAAAAuU/SXTcyEM2sPk/s1600/DSCN2201.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And finally do remember that today is ANZAC day; 25th of April 1915 is the date of the first Australian landings on the Gallipoli peninsular. Remember those men, along with the British, Irish, French and Turks who also fought in that ill-fated campaign.</div>

The rain fell heavily through the night but had cleared up this morning, thankfully! The sun shone all day which was a great help as we were finishing off the recording of the ablutions blocks. Here, Duncan and Graham work on the top block, whilst Lauren gets started on the second base.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1LJrib6t01g/U1kpbVK74pI/AAAAAAAAAtg/HmUcXIN6EtU/s1600/DSCN2193.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1LJrib6t01g/U1kpbVK74pI/AAAAAAAAAtg/HmUcXIN6EtU/s1600/DSCN2193.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the end of the day two bases had been drawn, with the third one half way through. Duncan and Graham did very professional job on their drawing. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v_Zwm48pgY8/U1kpkfp9IqI/AAAAAAAAAto/LBeRRjPmvzE/s1600/DSCN2195.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v_Zwm48pgY8/U1kpkfp9IqI/AAAAAAAAAto/LBeRRjPmvzE/s1600/DSCN2195.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lunch was also a feast of baking, when Jo and Sue both brought in some parkin and two lots of brownies! It was difficult to get back to work after the break!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bGsEV4vGp4w/U1kpLY24gMI/AAAAAAAAAtI/F7pDWcyAV9M/s1600/DSCN2190+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bGsEV4vGp4w/U1kpLY24gMI/AAAAAAAAAtI/F7pDWcyAV9M/s1600/DSCN2190+%25282%2529.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also today, 'Dad's Army' turned up on their dumper...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u2Ty7EqJ6P0/U1kpvvY9_9I/AAAAAAAAAts/glI-B1tEPm0/s1600/DSCN2194.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u2Ty7EqJ6P0/U1kpvvY9_9I/AAAAAAAAAts/glI-B1tEPm0/s1600/DSCN2194.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...and helped us to shift the spoil heaps that we had created!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Rm-FtEQryw/U1kpTdr-3VI/AAAAAAAAAtY/7tnys7XlFUo/s1600/DSCN2191+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Rm-FtEQryw/U1kpTdr-3VI/AAAAAAAAAtY/7tnys7XlFUo/s1600/DSCN2191+%25282%2529.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also had a site visit from Colonel Norton, formerly of the Yorks and Lancs Regiment. It was a pleasure to show him the area that his uncle trained in and to let him see a part of the regiment's history.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8p7oC8o_WSo/U1kpRV5ynUI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/7yERFLd56eg/s1600/DSCN2192.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8p7oC8o_WSo/U1kpRV5ynUI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/7yERFLd56eg/s1600/DSCN2192.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, we have two days to go, we are on track to finish on Saturday, the geophysics is almost finished and the recording of the features is also almost complete. </div>
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16902819358141550253noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4528251784495311387.post-70757521677350246622014-04-23T16:29:00.001+01:002014-04-23T16:29:14.997+01:0023 April 2014, Barnsley Pals Project, Day 9<div style="text-align: justify;">
The sun was back today, which was a massive relief to everyone, especially Graham who has been camping on the site! We seized our chance and Graham and Concrete Chris cleaned off the last bits of the final ablution block base, which didn't take long at all.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-diU3YEKojyY/U1fYH_Mo4pI/AAAAAAAAArs/QPw0X3CjFxs/s1600/DSCN2171.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-diU3YEKojyY/U1fYH_Mo4pI/AAAAAAAAArs/QPw0X3CjFxs/s1600/DSCN2171.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The rest of the team concentrated on finishing off more geophysical survey grids, again, aided by the lovely weather!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XJFxfMHODos/U1fYL9NPOlI/AAAAAAAAAr0/5rJyfHFivQk/s1600/DSCN2172.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XJFxfMHODos/U1fYL9NPOlI/AAAAAAAAAr0/5rJyfHFivQk/s1600/DSCN2172.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When the cleaning of the third base was compete it was time to take photographs for the archive and you can really see some of the features cut into the structure.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jK_RzZyWhkk/U1fYNgufK1I/AAAAAAAAAr8/Eq0ycLkST0I/s1600/DSCN2174.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jK_RzZyWhkk/U1fYNgufK1I/AAAAAAAAAr8/Eq0ycLkST0I/s1600/DSCN2174.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For example, the row of post holes is really obvious and pretty much complete compared to the other bases that we cleaned:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sABu3YrHY28/U1fYUMpb13I/AAAAAAAAAsE/zme8WVvwa2w/s1600/DSCN2178.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sABu3YrHY28/U1fYUMpb13I/AAAAAAAAAsE/zme8WVvwa2w/s1600/DSCN2178.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are still intriguing features though, like this little collection of features, which may have been for wooden steps leading into the ablution block. They appear to have been pressed into the concrete as it was setting.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZgmeG9ndjFI/U1fYXCxb_DI/AAAAAAAAAsM/qgx2TCboauY/s1600/DSCN2181.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZgmeG9ndjFI/U1fYXCxb_DI/AAAAAAAAAsM/qgx2TCboauY/s1600/DSCN2181.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now the remaining task is to draw the features, each block will have to be drawn at a scale of 1:20, which will then be digitized back in the office and included in the final report. This will be the lasting archive of this site work and it as important as the actual archaeological digging.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9bCXvoGNuTg/U1fYce6KQwI/AAAAAAAAAsU/epuuYyZNWXY/s1600/DSCN2184.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9bCXvoGNuTg/U1fYce6KQwI/AAAAAAAAAsU/epuuYyZNWXY/s1600/DSCN2184.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, there still are surprises, like these imprints in the concrete of corrugated iron sheets, most likely used as the structure's walls and held up with wooden beams, that created the post holes. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VacFCSn2pbM/U1fYg7a_vlI/AAAAAAAAAsc/b68jlivCDH0/s1600/DSCN2187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VacFCSn2pbM/U1fYg7a_vlI/AAAAAAAAAsc/b68jlivCDH0/s1600/DSCN2187.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can just make out on this one, two lines of iron sheeting. These were only spotted by the drawing team and demonstrates that some things can be missed first time around!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IuVtD18-6OQ/U1fYlddwpVI/AAAAAAAAAsk/LTn3K46J6sw/s1600/DSCN2189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IuVtD18-6OQ/U1fYlddwpVI/AAAAAAAAAsk/LTn3K46J6sw/s1600/DSCN2189.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then later in the afternoon, the Total Station Theodolite was brought out, now nicknamed the Doomsday Device, and was used in setting out more grids for the geophysical survey.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eIkhj5BDmr0/U1fY1yunGzI/AAAAAAAAAs0/Fs7-w9VyMDg/s1600/DSCN2185.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eIkhj5BDmr0/U1fY1yunGzI/AAAAAAAAAs0/Fs7-w9VyMDg/s1600/DSCN2185.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It didn't take long before a few more rows of flags were laid out ready to be surveyed!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xaOb2sB5wFQ/U1fYp6sSHcI/AAAAAAAAAss/vP2j57I8iew/s1600/DSCN2191.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xaOb2sB5wFQ/U1fYp6sSHcI/AAAAAAAAAss/vP2j57I8iew/s1600/DSCN2191.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And finally today we also had a visit from the Barnsley Chronicle's photographer, who told us he would make us famous! The feature should be in the next edition! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The end date is getting closer now and things are picking up pace a little, but we should still be finished in time. Thanks for reading!</div>

Unfortunately we have had too much of a good thing and the sun disappeared today, only to be replaced with rain! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It had stopped when we arrived at site at about half past nine, but then it started up again and didn't stop. The problem is that we were very close to finishing the last concrete base, but it was just too wet to clean up. Plus the wet ground would lead to some false resistivity readings, so we thought it was better to abandon site for the day!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We will be back tomorrow to see what happens with the weather and we all have our fingers crossed!</div>
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16902819358141550253noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4528251784495311387.post-64650191592739702482014-04-21T16:11:00.001+01:002014-04-21T16:11:57.662+01:0021 April 2014, Barnsley Pals Project, Day 7<div style="text-align: justify;">
The day began with a dull overcast weather situation, but many people still turned out to attend to the work on site. The geophysical survey continued and there were ten grids finished off today; a new site record! We are now well over thirty grids finished and once the data is downloaded there should be some interesting results, that will hopefully allow us to understand the layout of the original camp.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f68PWAOyKk4/U1Uxl_W5vII/AAAAAAAAArE/gvQ5pgllnro/s1600/DSCN2160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f68PWAOyKk4/U1Uxl_W5vII/AAAAAAAAArE/gvQ5pgllnro/s1600/DSCN2160.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The final base was also cleaned today, the volunteers scraped off the moss and the last remains of any overgrowth, ready to take photographs.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ruXNumgr9l4/U1UxgBrPMzI/AAAAAAAAAq8/MmHbFMBSRvg/s1600/DSCN2158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ruXNumgr9l4/U1UxgBrPMzI/AAAAAAAAAq8/MmHbFMBSRvg/s1600/DSCN2158.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This took the better part of the day but the concrete certainly looked better for it! This base will be photographed tomorrow, then we can begin the task of drawing the bases to scale. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bMbUXv89YHY/U1UxwUkpTxI/AAAAAAAAArU/O35PcN1e1e0/s1600/DSCN2162.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bMbUXv89YHY/U1UxwUkpTxI/AAAAAAAAArU/O35PcN1e1e0/s1600/DSCN2162.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
David also brought his leaf blower just to clear off the bases, this is probably the first time in archaeology that a leaf blower has been used on site!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CHPrKaz6CLo/U1UxxMobxGI/AAAAAAAAArY/0Wsgo_ls_VM/s1600/DSCN2168.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CHPrKaz6CLo/U1UxxMobxGI/AAAAAAAAArY/0Wsgo_ls_VM/s1600/DSCN2168.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are many other features on the site that are connected to the Barnsley Pals and their use of the land, for example, there is the concrete remains of the camp magazine, used for storing explosives and ammunition. This is overgrown and it may be useful in the future to have a look at this feature from an archaeological perspective as well. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is also this ravine in the woods, over which a wooden bridge was constructed, which allowed access to the camp from the Dodworth Road and saved the soldiers from walking a long route around the ravine. Again, there may still be remains of this bridge in the ground. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hSb2tgO14iQ/U1UxnUbywsI/AAAAAAAAArM/xFb8XcgUF-4/s1600/DSCN2159.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hSb2tgO14iQ/U1UxnUbywsI/AAAAAAAAArM/xFb8XcgUF-4/s1600/DSCN2159.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are now over half way through the project, we are on time with the work that needs to be done and tomorrow we will start the planning of the bases whilst the geophysics continues. If you are interested in joining in or even just popping down to have a chat, please feel free!</div>

The day began today with a grey overcast cloudy sky, but that didn't dampen people's spirits as we had a good turnout from the volunteers, inlcuding Becca, who had come all the way from Liverpool to join us! The clearing of the third ablutions block base continued, this is the last one we will look at, although there may be three others on the site. We don't have the time to look at the others during this investigation, but we are hoping we may get a chance in the future. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-znPwPafq5T4/U1KMnj1K4TI/AAAAAAAAAqM/K2Hj1WnzXNQ/s1600/DSCN2113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-znPwPafq5T4/U1KMnj1K4TI/AAAAAAAAAqM/K2Hj1WnzXNQ/s1600/DSCN2113.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The geophysics team completed eight grids, even though they had to brave the death-defying survey of the Scout campfire! Although this is a modern feature, we still have to record the ground around it, just in case there are any underlying remains.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yl5Bvps8LNY/U1KMoFpqeAI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/zrGxS3VMG30/s1600/DSCN2114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yl5Bvps8LNY/U1KMoFpqeAI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/zrGxS3VMG30/s1600/DSCN2114.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
More features were revealed in the concrete of the third base, they appear to mirror the features in the first base we cleaned and this may give some clues as to the construction of these bases.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6EvFt3qc9us/U1KMueor91I/AAAAAAAAAqc/x3JpEnfwxK4/s1600/DSCN2115.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6EvFt3qc9us/U1KMueor91I/AAAAAAAAAqc/x3JpEnfwxK4/s1600/DSCN2115.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With the second base all cleaned and finally finished we recorded it with photography, then later next week it will be fully drawn and levelled, ready to go into the final report. You can see in the photo below that the base was built on top of a layer of rubble. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-go7wGwmBgsg/U1KNBo1ug9I/AAAAAAAAAqk/mJ7z0TUKaio/s1600/DSCN2119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-go7wGwmBgsg/U1KNBo1ug9I/AAAAAAAAAqk/mJ7z0TUKaio/s1600/DSCN2119.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The sun did finally come out for the last hour of the day, let's just hope it remains like this for the next week. We have done the majority of the cleaning, so next week will be given over mostly to recording the features and it would be a shame to have to do this in the rain! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4xOxRUQyZ24/U1KNJEy-_2I/AAAAAAAAAqs/hB4e72lSFkc/s1600/DSCN2131.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4xOxRUQyZ24/U1KNJEy-_2I/AAAAAAAAAqs/hB4e72lSFkc/s1600/DSCN2131.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are not on site tomorrow, but will be back on Monday, if you are interested in joining us, please feel free to call down, we still have a lot to do!</div>

The sunny weather came back today and it brought out a good team of volunteers! We had a chap called John who's great-grandfather had served in the Barnsley Pals and had actually trained at the camp, so it was nice to be able to introduce him to the areas his ancestor would have known for a few months one hundred years ago! The work on cleaning the ablution blocks continued with most of the volunteers working on the central base. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YOlWrLnqwKM/U1E9iPFHq6I/AAAAAAAAAoE/k85XjRiQxWw/s1600/DSCN2086.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YOlWrLnqwKM/U1E9iPFHq6I/AAAAAAAAAoE/k85XjRiQxWw/s1600/DSCN2086.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the base with the interesting feature at the end, we realised that the two blocks either side of this block are much smaller with different features identifiable in the concrete. It may mean that this central block is for a different purpose than that of the other two, maybe a large shower block, whilst the other two house sinks? It is still too early to make conclusions however and the team has been mulling over these questions whilst they work.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KDLqQIFjIUc/U1E90UZiPJI/AAAAAAAAAoU/i2ZPY31svf0/s1600/DSCN2087.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KDLqQIFjIUc/U1E90UZiPJI/AAAAAAAAAoU/i2ZPY31svf0/s1600/DSCN2087.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The blocks appear to sit at the end of the marks in the grass that show where the barracks huts would have sat. You can see one of the marks below, the faint outline of a rectangle can just be seen in the darker green grass. There are at least six of these marks, along with six ablution block bases, so perhaps each barrack hut was served by a single ablution block.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GxzrsvHG5g8/U1E99jYxqvI/AAAAAAAAAoc/LWJi8GkVq9s/s1600/DSCN2089.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GxzrsvHG5g8/U1E99jYxqvI/AAAAAAAAAoc/LWJi8GkVq9s/s1600/DSCN2089.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Eight more grids were covered in the geophysics survey, we have completed nearly half of the total grids so far, so we are well on target at the moment!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RD7qfkWDQCY/U1E9vWSNMsI/AAAAAAAAAoM/H7fPiozXWPM/s1600/DSCN2088.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RD7qfkWDQCY/U1E9vWSNMsI/AAAAAAAAAoM/H7fPiozXWPM/s1600/DSCN2088.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then at lunch the team had a well earned picnic break!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BpyXSTV1T5o/U1E-SaUqdjI/AAAAAAAAAos/UVk0f_Z4m2Q/s1600/DSCN2092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BpyXSTV1T5o/U1E-SaUqdjI/AAAAAAAAAos/UVk0f_Z4m2Q/s1600/DSCN2092.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Cleaning of the third hut base that we are looking at in this work continued as well, this one is more overgrown than the others, so will take a little longer to complete.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Kcvh5DTdbQw/U1E-HUMda8I/AAAAAAAAAok/FtwDcL6qAYU/s1600/DSCN2091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Kcvh5DTdbQw/U1E-HUMda8I/AAAAAAAAAok/FtwDcL6qAYU/s1600/DSCN2091.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, some more features were quickly seen in the concrete, like these post holes, possibly for internal frames and the like. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HHfZbXzrmbY/U1E-oLx4i_I/AAAAAAAAAo0/equoekIHuBE/s1600/DSCN2093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HHfZbXzrmbY/U1E-oLx4i_I/AAAAAAAAAo0/equoekIHuBE/s1600/DSCN2093.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the central base a small pipe was discovered, set into the concrete, maybe this was a structural pole or a water pipe. It is difficult to know precisely at this stage without taking up some of the base to see where the pipe runs.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AcuqhAWTrHc/U1E-wtgltBI/AAAAAAAAAo8/v0S8yGJ19mo/s1600/DSCN2095.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AcuqhAWTrHc/U1E-wtgltBI/AAAAAAAAAo8/v0S8yGJ19mo/s1600/DSCN2095.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Amongst the finds today was this seasonal offering...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tQguLx4SPrY/U1E-9LTbZJI/AAAAAAAAApE/mXykow4rTdU/s1600/DSCN2096.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tQguLx4SPrY/U1E-9LTbZJI/AAAAAAAAApE/mXykow4rTdU/s1600/DSCN2096.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With work on the top base completed, it was photographed (while the sun lasted!) and the following pictures clearly show the features that we have encountered!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HHtuYjVo47g/U1E_GeQRNSI/AAAAAAAAApM/Xo-vChl8HqE/s1600/DSCN2098.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HHtuYjVo47g/U1E_GeQRNSI/AAAAAAAAApM/Xo-vChl8HqE/s1600/DSCN2098.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the drain outlet, possibly running to a soak-away.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tungEQuXtGE/U1E_Z5mX_eI/AAAAAAAAApk/dsy5vY6ElfM/s1600/DSCN2104.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tungEQuXtGE/U1E_Z5mX_eI/AAAAAAAAApk/dsy5vY6ElfM/s1600/DSCN2104.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The internal row of postholes that may be for a frame.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4-GGcKLT3ms/U1E_g9bRMMI/AAAAAAAAAps/mGjUSE3SUSA/s1600/DSCN2105.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4-GGcKLT3ms/U1E_g9bRMMI/AAAAAAAAAps/mGjUSE3SUSA/s1600/DSCN2105.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ciEv9zPHDVU/U1E_nX63f8I/AAAAAAAAAp0/bcKDuOqrM1s/s1600/DSCN2108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ciEv9zPHDVU/U1E_nX63f8I/AAAAAAAAAp0/bcKDuOqrM1s/s1600/DSCN2108.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second base was almost finished by the end of the day as well, so there is only the large amount of foliage to remove on the third base before we can record them all in correct archaeological fashion.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dCvxOn2jWNA/U1E_rSqK9XI/AAAAAAAAAp8/xpJMYnmCuMg/s1600/DSCN2112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dCvxOn2jWNA/U1E_rSqK9XI/AAAAAAAAAp8/xpJMYnmCuMg/s1600/DSCN2112.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another great day in the sun and lots of work finished off. Today we also had a visit from a young boy who, since talking to us about the First World War and the work we are doing, has given up his dream of being a footballer and now wants to be an archaeologist!!</div>
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16902819358141550253noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4528251784495311387.post-68700986627377760402014-04-17T16:12:00.003+01:002014-04-18T08:20:46.794+01:0017 April 2014, Barnsley Pals Project, Day 4<div style="text-align: justify;">
Day four brought a cold and bitter wind with it, also an ill Christine, who was soon packed off home to bed. With Christine off site there was no geophysics carried out, so the volunteers continued cleaning the ablution block bases. Here Sue, Andy and Russell work on getting the remaining grass off the concrete. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4Hb7HeaBVnU/U0_sISiqsMI/AAAAAAAAAnE/20SfBuvpyWQ/s1600/DSCN2079.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4Hb7HeaBVnU/U0_sISiqsMI/AAAAAAAAAnE/20SfBuvpyWQ/s1600/DSCN2079.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second block base was also cleaned back by Duncan, Lauren and Alex, the steps you can see on the right hand side are modern insertions created by the Scouts. This base is a different build as it appears not to have the same amount of post holes as the one higher up. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1exxoMP7vik/U0_sKrdsAOI/AAAAAAAAAnM/41iVKZkydcc/s1600/DSCN2081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1exxoMP7vik/U0_sKrdsAOI/AAAAAAAAAnM/41iVKZkydcc/s1600/DSCN2081.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It also has an intriguing feature at the end, found by Duncan. We initially thought it was a communal bath, but as more was revealed it became more enigmatic. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L8Cv4FWr-oA/U0_sQch9-BI/AAAAAAAAAnU/6YTz4aIcYvo/s1600/DSCN2080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L8Cv4FWr-oA/U0_sQch9-BI/AAAAAAAAAnU/6YTz4aIcYvo/s1600/DSCN2080.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Unfortunately, a large part of the structure has broken away, so we may never know what it was or what its function was.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ADTfP62CdAc/U0_slFJBs5I/AAAAAAAAAnc/zeFNN2LLYI0/s1600/DSCN2082.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ADTfP62CdAc/U0_slFJBs5I/AAAAAAAAAnc/zeFNN2LLYI0/s1600/DSCN2082.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then in the afternoon Anne and Philip joined us for more cleaning and this speeded the process up somewhat!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ZJ7nlxn_UA/U0_smkY73sI/AAAAAAAAAnk/jw86kNqYegg/s1600/DSCN2083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--ZJ7nlxn_UA/U0_smkY73sI/AAAAAAAAAnk/jw86kNqYegg/s1600/DSCN2083.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With most of the grass off the top base certain structures and features can now be clearly seen, the post holes for a possible frame are more obvious, as is the guttering system. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eNPXnRuVmaw/U0_srnRvqbI/AAAAAAAAAns/nNKStyW2DPE/s1600/DSCN2084.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eNPXnRuVmaw/U0_srnRvqbI/AAAAAAAAAns/nNKStyW2DPE/s1600/DSCN2084.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The gutter runs around the entire block, emptying out on the bottom left of the picture. We have yet to examine this area, but there may be a soak-away in this area to stop the ground getting swampy with all the excess water. The post holes on both sides of the structure can clearly be seen, as can the line of them down the centre of the base. There is still a little more cleaning to do on this feature, but it is almost finished!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a4drgWJmtj4/U0_swDvHaFI/AAAAAAAAAn0/uBNKwzJheZQ/s1600/DSCN2085.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a4drgWJmtj4/U0_swDvHaFI/AAAAAAAAAn0/uBNKwzJheZQ/s1600/DSCN2085.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is still quite a lot more to do, but we will be back tomorrow morning to continue the work, if you want to join us or are just interested in popping along for a chat, please do!</div>

Day three and there is still no let up in the sunny weather! We were joined by two new faces today, Mark and Sue, both eager to try out archaeological techniques. The team split into two and half of the group picked up where they had left off yesterday at the ablution block bases. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Duncan then arrived in style on this 1945 BSA motorbike, it certainly helped to add a military flavour to the day!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-26QKW6N6cfQ/U06alJO1BII/AAAAAAAAAlc/vsG14MqxBIg/s1600/DSCN2064.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-26QKW6N6cfQ/U06alJO1BII/AAAAAAAAAlc/vsG14MqxBIg/s1600/DSCN2064.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back on the resistivity survey, Abbie and Sue walked the array through the grids. The team managed to complete nine squares, the current site record! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1poT04lVIwM/U06ah_sBzcI/AAAAAAAAAlU/2fNRX3dZrZI/s1600/DSCN2065.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1poT04lVIwM/U06ah_sBzcI/AAAAAAAAAlU/2fNRX3dZrZI/s1600/DSCN2065.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The good weather is certainly helping the speediness of the survey, that and the reasonably flat ground!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yBDmGjYHq0c/U06as5DspjI/AAAAAAAAAls/p0xPDpENTc4/s1600/DSCN2066.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yBDmGjYHq0c/U06as5DspjI/AAAAAAAAAls/p0xPDpENTc4/s1600/DSCN2066.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ground is not as flat as it first seems and the site is full of interesting lumps and bumps, for example there is this rectangular cut into the road banking that lines up with a flat area immediately to the side. It is probably the surface for a long hut base, the survey should be able to pick up any disturbance below the ground here.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pSkqKT-8F-U/U06a-hOMSTI/AAAAAAAAAmM/OG7fag5CSvg/s1600/DSCN2070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pSkqKT-8F-U/U06a-hOMSTI/AAAAAAAAAmM/OG7fag5CSvg/s1600/DSCN2070.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After lunch the teams swapped over and more and more was revealed of the concrete bases. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0jAl-YmfMYE/U06bD_Bvj-I/AAAAAAAAAmU/MoDzeLmAi7o/s1600/DSCN2071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0jAl-YmfMYE/U06bD_Bvj-I/AAAAAAAAAmU/MoDzeLmAi7o/s1600/DSCN2071.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
More post holes were revealed in the concrete base, probably from a frame that held up the showers or the roof of the structure.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KNlprnmZ8SA/U06a1QmuWKI/AAAAAAAAAl8/Nmj3QawyOyw/s1600/DSCN2068.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KNlprnmZ8SA/U06a1QmuWKI/AAAAAAAAAl8/Nmj3QawyOyw/s1600/DSCN2068.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The post holes ran in a line across the edge of the base, interestingly there appeared to be square ones, inter-spaced with rectangular ones, the square holes look like they match up with a line of post holes down the centre line of the base. Is this the structure of a frame? Are the rectangular holes the remnants of the structure's exterior? It is difficult to tell at this stage and hopefully the full excavation may be able to answer these questions.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xJ0TzK7Dd3c/U06bIM6Nw_I/AAAAAAAAAmc/kwnKkOTox9Y/s1600/DSCN2072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xJ0TzK7Dd3c/U06bIM6Nw_I/AAAAAAAAAmc/kwnKkOTox9Y/s1600/DSCN2072.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have had very little in the way of military artefacts, it has mainly been domestic items, such as bottles and even tent pegs (from the Scout Camp!). However, today, Concrete Chris found this spent cartridge. Initial excitement was short lived as it was seen to be a modern NATO 7.62mm blank round, manufactured in 1985! How this has managed to get on site is a mystery, but it could have come from a group of re-enactors who possibly used the site for a demonstration.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hdd-WOCj20U/U06bMjwbFUI/AAAAAAAAAmk/nSP4a1QdeW0/s1600/DSCN2074.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hdd-WOCj20U/U06bMjwbFUI/AAAAAAAAAmk/nSP4a1QdeW0/s1600/DSCN2074.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the end of the day the two bases that we are currently working on are coming along nicely, both have revealed structural elements that look like drainage systems, plus some of the features of their construction. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lLZz8Eh-mxk/U06bRYUeqAI/AAAAAAAAAms/qXLvHRbYGmk/s1600/DSCN2075.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lLZz8Eh-mxk/U06bRYUeqAI/AAAAAAAAAms/qXLvHRbYGmk/s1600/DSCN2075.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is still quite a way to go before they can be recorded, but they are looking much better than when we started two days ago!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--KutAv7UpBI/U06bVWTNwUI/AAAAAAAAAm0/bgHK2VrzUwA/s1600/DSCN2076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--KutAv7UpBI/U06bVWTNwUI/AAAAAAAAAm0/bgHK2VrzUwA/s1600/DSCN2076.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We will be back tomorrow for more work, so if you are interested in getting involved, then drop us a line at: info@elmetarchaeology.co.uk or keep checking back at this blog for further updates!</div>

Day two on the Barnsley Pals project began with another bright and sunny morning, our luck seems to be holding at the moment. We had another good turn out from the volunteers and they immediately picked up from yesterday with Andy and Stephen starting off on the resistivity survey. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MEwB46_ULgs/U01PUKRmRLI/AAAAAAAAAkI/8d2vOwAPNVU/s1600/DSCN2049.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MEwB46_ULgs/U01PUKRmRLI/AAAAAAAAAkI/8d2vOwAPNVU/s1600/DSCN2049.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a> </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Despite there being a group of children using the site, they managed to get seven grids finished in no time at all! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mTZAqQnNX7E/U01QL8_yt8I/AAAAAAAAAlI/3-lJxiDc-pg/s1600/DSCN2061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mTZAqQnNX7E/U01QL8_yt8I/AAAAAAAAAlI/3-lJxiDc-pg/s1600/DSCN2061.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The rest of us turned our attention to the extant ablution block bases, which needed a good clean...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YJI2LmpFkDY/U01Pga0wMiI/AAAAAAAAAkY/li_tI79ehc8/s1600/DSCN2050.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YJI2LmpFkDY/U01Pga0wMiI/AAAAAAAAAkY/li_tI79ehc8/s1600/DSCN2050.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These had been cleared off a few years ago, but grass and weeds had grown over them again.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5mmVS8jqo0o/U01Pba23yMI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/lRY8fKm-gos/s1600/DSCN2051.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5mmVS8jqo0o/U01Pba23yMI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/lRY8fKm-gos/s1600/DSCN2051.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
However, you can still make out a few of the features in the concrete, like the drainage channels that run down either side of the structures. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YAyzOzTdQGk/U01Pk68OSlI/AAAAAAAAAkg/ORlJf2XNj80/s1600/DSCN2052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YAyzOzTdQGk/U01Pk68OSlI/AAAAAAAAAkg/ORlJf2XNj80/s1600/DSCN2052.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So the team began work on clearing off the growth and exposing the concrete below. Again, this was aided by the lovely sunshine!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RVk9LWdSb3s/U01P5OezDuI/AAAAAAAAAkw/zQJ5mtvV3Tw/s1600/DSCN2054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RVk9LWdSb3s/U01P5OezDuI/AAAAAAAAAkw/zQJ5mtvV3Tw/s1600/DSCN2054.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other smaller features, such as post holes began to appear under the turf covering!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--2ydlRboYfI/U01P1ixQtwI/AAAAAAAAAko/vGfMhjk8e4k/s1600/DSCN2056.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--2ydlRboYfI/U01P1ixQtwI/AAAAAAAAAko/vGfMhjk8e4k/s1600/DSCN2056.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chris cleaned off an entire corner to reveal a row of postholes, probably used to hold up the temporary walls of the washing facilities. You can also make out the drainage feature on the left hand side of the picture. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PSfCJfEMEPk/U01QKMIsjNI/AAAAAAAAAlA/4VILNAt3hwM/s1600/DSCN2060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PSfCJfEMEPk/U01QKMIsjNI/AAAAAAAAAlA/4VILNAt3hwM/s1600/DSCN2060.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These concrete bases may have been cleaned before, but they have never been fully recorded in an archaeological manner and this is what this project hopes to achieve. We are expecting that there will be many more small features that need investigating on these three bases. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TSeE-r63weA/U01P-CNbmPI/AAAAAAAAAk4/UaeJPqOmQlk/s1600/DSCN2058.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TSeE-r63weA/U01P-CNbmPI/AAAAAAAAAk4/UaeJPqOmQlk/s1600/DSCN2058.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The work continued throughout the afternoon and was by no means completed, tomorrow will see more of the bases uncovered. Check back for further information in our next blog post! If you would like to get involved, please have a look at our website for details of volunteering: <a href="http://www.elmetarchaeology.co.uk/">www.elmetarchaeology.co.uk</a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16902819358141550253noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4528251784495311387.post-77482826635235126662014-04-14T16:15:00.000+01:002014-04-14T21:42:53.192+01:0014 April 2014, Barnsley Pals Project, Day 1<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today saw the sun shine and Elmet arrive at Silverwood Scout camp for the first day of our
surveying project that will attempt to delineate the training area of the Barnsley Pals in the First World War. The modern day scout camp is home to what was known as Newhall Camp, which housed the men of the 13th and 14th (Service) Battalions of the Yorks and Lancs Regiment. The men were drawn locally from Barnsley and stayed at the camp from late 1914 through to May 1915. This project is an attempt to locate hut bases and pillars for huts that may still remain in the ground using resistivity, we will also be cleaning the existing ablutions blocks and recording them archaeologically. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had a good turn out from volunteers and needed to get the site gridded out ready for the geophysical survey. <br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dxUKEx1hVTk/U0v3lIEvVHI/AAAAAAAAAjY/Dhlc-ntohJE/s1600/DSCN2039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dxUKEx1hVTk/U0v3lIEvVHI/AAAAAAAAAjY/Dhlc-ntohJE/s1600/DSCN2039.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The site was flagged up at 20 metre intervals by using the Pythagoras theorem to get right angles from a straight baseline. Fortunately we had a few students who had already done this work before, so that speeded up the process.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eyXAsGEUuJU/U0v3k8o3j1I/AAAAAAAAAjU/71dCLg0CFxY/s1600/DSCN2041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eyXAsGEUuJU/U0v3k8o3j1I/AAAAAAAAAjU/71dCLg0CFxY/s1600/DSCN2041.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Soon, the entire site was covered in little red flags!</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B1LgTtpNw30/U0v3jRvBNUI/AAAAAAAAAjM/5r9IfCtUfBw/s1600/DSCN2042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B1LgTtpNw30/U0v3jRvBNUI/AAAAAAAAAjM/5r9IfCtUfBw/s1600/DSCN2042.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had most of the site flagged out by the middle of the afternoon, so Christine demonstrated how to use the resistivity array to the volunteers.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W0jrqYCemfU/U0v4MeLWFfI/AAAAAAAAAj0/X8gqJEJrmBY/s1600/DSCN2044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W0jrqYCemfU/U0v4MeLWFfI/AAAAAAAAAj0/X8gqJEJrmBY/s1600/DSCN2044.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then they were given a go on the machine, under close supervision.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_uIR8ZEM3kY/U0v4E8rS3jI/AAAAAAAAAjs/uUxLnWgGFJs/s1600/DSCN2046.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_uIR8ZEM3kY/U0v4E8rS3jI/AAAAAAAAAjs/uUxLnWgGFJs/s1600/DSCN2046.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But they were soon up and running themselves!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P0iLiYfhRmY/U0v3_ZwfFZI/AAAAAAAAAjk/nTYE09mkhWc/s1600/DSCN2047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P0iLiYfhRmY/U0v3_ZwfFZI/AAAAAAAAAjk/nTYE09mkhWc/s1600/DSCN2047.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, we've had a great start to the first day, the sun shone all day and we even began the survey! 2013 has been a brilliant year
for Elmet Archaeological Services Ltd! In fact, we have never been this busy
since our formation in 2009! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We began the year with a commercial
archaeological evaluation at Thrybergh in Rotherham, in freezing conditions and
even snow! Our annual Dearne Valley Archaeology Day took place in mid-February
with over 100 attendees and 10 speakers. An array of presentations was
delivered with local, national and international topics. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nw0pVTip_cc/UrhxqrdudOI/AAAAAAAAAh0/0dTfm6WcIDQ/s1600/IMG_4700.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nw0pVTip_cc/UrhxqrdudOI/AAAAAAAAAh0/0dTfm6WcIDQ/s320/IMG_4700.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Freezing conditions at Thrybergh </i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Soon after this the
Hickleton Hall Prisoner of War project started which ran for a few months and ended
with <a href="http://elmetarchaeology.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/22-july-2013-hickleton-hall-pow-project.html">fieldwork on the POW camp itself</a>.
Alongside this project, a number of workshops were hosted on a wide range of archaeological topics from
Osteoracheology to Artefact Illustration which were open to members of the
public and archaeologists alike. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

In May we continued the war theme
but focused on First World War practise trenches. Visits to Redmires in
Sheffield and Silverwood in Barnsley followed, as did a round of geophysics
training with various local groups. These included our regular group from the Oaks
Day Centre in Wath-Upon-Dearne. We also had our second commercial job, a geophysical survey and strip, map and record in North Yorkshire.</div>

Immediately following this Hickleton
POW project had finished with two weeks of successful fieldwork in July and we were still out in the field, but at Sutton
Common, near Doncaster with the University of Hull, trying to find evidence for
the Mesolithic period. Christine then went down south to Dartington in Devon
searching for more Mesolithic evidence of short-term habitation, again training
University of Hull undergraduates in the skills of fieldwork. </div>

October saw us helping
Rotherham Archaeological Society to try to locate a possible <a href="http://elmetarchaeology.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/14-october-2013-ulley-roman-project-day.html">Roman Fort in Ulley</a>, a project which engaged over a hundred volunteers and local enthusiasts! November was taken over with our final big event this year; the commercial strip, map and record of a
cementation furnace in the historical heartland of Sheffield at Kelham Island. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We also had many smaller
projects, we’ve visited schools, held workshops at our Wath offices and we also
helped the Brinsworth Local History Group locate a Roman road! Not only that,
but we currently host a weekly reminiscences group in our Wath office for older
people and we have worked with the good people at Clifton Museum, Rotherham and
made many links with other volunteer led organisations. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Currently we are working on several
projects that will take us into the New Year; some with local history groups; a
First World War project and the archaeological examination of a Norman castle. Not
only this, but we have plenty more projects on the boil as well! As good as
2013 has been, we think 2014 will be even better for Elmet! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Both Chris and Alex would like to
take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us in any way this last
year, either by helping out on one of our fieldwork opportunities, or just by
generally supporting Elmet Archaeological Services Ltd throughout 2013. We
couldn’t be this successful without you!

The last day! Today was the day finished the surveying! Unfortunately we were also joined on site by this gentleman. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Sl7G2CroLm0/UnPdW3rtMXI/AAAAAAAAAgs/ZUydX9R82B0/s1600/DSCN0636.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Sl7G2CroLm0/UnPdW3rtMXI/AAAAAAAAAgs/ZUydX9R82B0/s320/DSCN0636.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
An uninvited metal detectorist. He had arrived before us and had already
made several holes in the plough soil which we spotted as we walked
across the field. He told us that he had landowner permission to be there, but couldn't tell us who the land owner was. We know who the landowner is, as we had gone through the proper channels to be allowed access to the field for the project. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also ignored our pleas for him to talk to the farmer to tell him
what he was doing on his land, then called the game keeper to come and
defend his presence (who was also confrontational and aggressive when he arrived). Whilst Elmet are not against metal detectoring on site, we do believe it should fit in with a proper archaeological strategy and should not be a randomly selected hole digging exercise. He had already recovered artefacts from the ground, but as they were taken out of context, they were completely useless for understanding the past. Plus he refused to talk to us about any further finds he made whilst on site. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QYM5nFpy3Qs/UnPdWUvkxRI/AAAAAAAAAgo/xbzFJsRxhWw/s1600/DSCN0638.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QYM5nFpy3Qs/UnPdWUvkxRI/AAAAAAAAAgo/xbzFJsRxhWw/s320/DSCN0638.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All we ask is for metal detectorists to work with us and not against us, as this man did. It is deeply upsetting to see that our hard work of the past three weeks can be so easily destroyed by one single minded individual. Especially on the day that the Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries wrongly calls metal detectorists <a href="http://heritageaction.wordpress.com/2013/11/01/ed-vaisey-insults-every-archaeologist/">'Heroes of Heritage'</a>.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o4UAmBxrtsA/UnPdfibBlTI/AAAAAAAAAhA/HCUxefirMz0/s1600/DSCN0639.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o4UAmBxrtsA/UnPdfibBlTI/AAAAAAAAAhA/HCUxefirMz0/s320/DSCN0639.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In happier news, Dave and Brian helped to finish off the final few grids of the geophysical survey. For three weeks Dave has been coming to site to help and this was his first time using the resistivity! He was a natural! We have decided that the lack of Roman artefacts in the field shows that there is little point in covering the whole field and have targeted the important areas instead. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EjnvDo-Iz00/UnPdXmPxw8I/AAAAAAAAAgw/86wBUJkX_M0/s1600/DSCN0637.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EjnvDo-Iz00/UnPdXmPxw8I/AAAAAAAAAgw/86wBUJkX_M0/s320/DSCN0637.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was finished in super quick time and we had five grids completed before lunch! The rain set in just in time for us to collect the flags from the field and make sure we had left nothing behind!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tckOTwB-wmk/UnPdjiL-WaI/AAAAAAAAAhI/7aogGuRhAdM/s1600/DSCN0640.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tckOTwB-wmk/UnPdjiL-WaI/AAAAAAAAAhI/7aogGuRhAdM/s320/DSCN0640.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, the fieldwork is now over, it's back to the office to write the report and wash the finds. We will need help with washing finds, so please let us know if you are interested!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, the project has been featured in the <i>Rotherham Advertiser</i> this week, so please buy a copy and have a read about what we have been up to!<br />
<br />
Elmet would like to extend our sincerest thank you to all who have been involved in the project as volunteers and the <a href="http://www.rasociety.org.uk/">Rotherham Archaeological Society</a> for allowing us this chance to work alongside them and their members. Hopefully, we will have many more similar projects in the future! </div>
